The best beginner camera for outdoor landscape photography is one you’ll carry and can learn to use—not a particular model that suits every budget or region. Compare the camera and lens together: a compact camera favors portability, while an interchangeable-lens camera gives you more options as your interests grow. For many beginners, a general-purpose kit lens is a practical place to start.
Choose a camera format that fits how you shoot
A compact camera keeps the kit simple and portable. An interchangeable-lens camera lets you change lenses for different compositions and subjects, including landscapes and wildlife. Canon’s camera buying guide outlines these broad categories.
Compare the complete system rather than the body alone. Consider the camera’s weight, controls and learning curve, the lenses available for its mount, protection for outdoor use, and whether you mainly want still photos or video. A kit lens usually covers enough situations to help you learn what you enjoy photographing before investing in specialist lenses.
Match the lens to the landscape
Focal length changes what a photograph emphasizes. A wide-angle lens can include more of a broad vista; a telephoto lens can isolate distant details and make elements in a scene appear closer together. Neither is automatically the right landscape lens: choose based on the composition you want. Canon’s lens buying guide describes these lens categories.
#1 Best Overall
| Lens approach | Useful for | Beginner consideration |
|---|---|---|
| General-purpose zoom | A mix of views while learning | A sensible starting lens; check which focal lengths it covers. |
| Wide-angle | Broad vistas and expansive foregrounds | Consider one if your kit lens does not frame the views you want. |
| Telephoto | Distant details or a more isolated composition | Useful when your subject is far away; it is not essential for every landscape. |
Before buying any additional lens, confirm that it fits your camera mount. Canon’s landscape photography guide also discusses wide, standard and telephoto approaches. For high-contrast scenes, some photographers combine exposures or process a RAW file rather than relying only on filters.
Check protection for both body and lens
Outdoor photography can expose equipment to dust, moisture and cold. Look at the protection offered by both the camera body and the lens, and shield the equipment when conditions call for it. Weather-resistant does not mean waterproof, so do not assume a camera is safe in rain or spray without checking its specific rating and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Nikon’s cold-weather guidance says most current digital cameras are designed to work at least down to freezing. That is general guidance, not a guarantee for every model or battery. Check the operating limits for the exact camera and plan for the conditions of your outing.
Learn with aperture-priority mode
Aperture-priority mode is a useful way to begin shaping a landscape photograph without setting every exposure control manually. You choose the aperture and the camera selects a shutter speed. Sony’s landscape tutorial suggests trying f/8 as a starting example for keeping a scene sharply focused. It is not a universal setting: the suitable aperture depends on the lens and conditions.

- Set your priorities. Decide how much portability matters, whether you want interchangeable lenses, and whether video is important alongside still photography.
- Compare complete kits. Assess the body and included lens together for weight, controls, outdoor protection and the kinds of scenes you want to frame.
- Start with a general-purpose lens. Use it to learn your preferences before choosing a wide-angle or telephoto lens for a specific need.
- Check local details. Prices, availability and model configurations vary by country and change over time; compare current offers where you live and confirm the lens mount and manufacturer limits.
No single camera can be named the best choice for every beginner without knowing budget, location and intended mix of stills and video. Canon’s buying guide can help you understand camera categories, but the right decision depends on the complete system you are willing to carry and learn.
