To check a prerecorded replay stream, open its event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and review Stream health and Stream status. Then verify the preview, listen to the audio, and check the public watch page on a phone as well as on your production setup. The dashboard reports what YouTube is receiving; it does not confirm that your source file or replay software is playing the right material.
Where to check YouTube Live stream health
In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled or active event in Live Control Room. While the stream is running, the room displays stream health and analytics. Look first at Stream status: YouTube provides error messages and instructions there. Follow the specific message shown for your event rather than assuming every problem has the same cause. YouTube Help: See your live stream’s metrics.
Health and audience metrics answer different questions. Status messages help identify stream issues; concurrent viewers, views, chat rate, likes, duration, and average view duration describe activity or engagement. A low viewer count alone does not establish an ingest problem.
Preflight checklist before the replay goes public
- Open the intended event. Confirm you are in the scheduled stream for this replay, not another event. Check its privacy and event details.
- Verify the encoder destination and key. Make sure the replay encoder is sending to YouTube’s server URL with the matching stream key. YouTube describes the key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed. If you believe it has been compromised, reset it; never expose it in screenshots or public instructions. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Send a representative test. Before the event, test with moving picture and audio similar to the actual replay. Confirm the encoder is transmitting and allow the Live Control Room preview to appear. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring health messages during the event. YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
- Inspect the preview before going live. Confirm the intended prerecorded segment is playing, the picture is visible, and the sound is audible. Check the event’s title and privacy setting before selecting Go live for a scheduled stream. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Check the viewer experience. Open the event’s watch page as a viewer would and verify that it is accessible and showing the intended content. Test on a mobile device too. A healthy ingest indicator by itself does not prove every destination or device is displaying correctly. YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
Monitor the feed and the replay source during the event
Keep Live Control Room’s Stream health and status messages visible, and continue checking picture and sound. If a problem starts, note the exact message and when it began. Compare the YouTube preview and viewer playback with the replay software’s output. This helps narrow down whether the problem is visible in YouTube’s incoming feed, the viewer path, or the source/pllayout process; YouTube’s help pages do not specify diagnostics for a particular third-party replay application.

Check the source file and replay software separately: confirm the file is intact and that playback has not stalled on black, frozen, or unintended footage. YouTube’s dashboard monitors the incoming live feed, not the internal state of the playout application. For the network and encoder, test upload bitrate and use settings that are reliable for the available connection. YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
Encoder settings that can affect stream health
Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are sending. The recommended bitrate varies with those choices, so there is no single bitrate that applies to every replay setup. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video ingestion for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube platform recommendations; they do not guarantee that a particular replay system supports every codec. The guide recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

After the event: verify the archive
YouTube states that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Verify the resulting YouTube archive rather than assuming it is complete, and check the local recording if your workflow keeps one. YouTube’s streaming tips advise checking local archive-file integrity and confirming its file size is growing during recording. Troubleshoot common replay-stream symptoms
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears | Confirm the encoder is connected to the intended event and using its matching server URL and stream key. | Check Live Control Room’s Stream status message and follow its event-specific instructions. Compare the encoder output with the replay software’s playback. |
| Preview appears, but picture or sound is wrong | Check the playing segment, source file, and replay software output; verify picture and audio in the preview. | Use a representative test and compare the preview with viewer playback to locate where the discrepancy appears. |
| Video freezes or audio drops out | Check whether the source or playout software has stalled, and whether the upload connection and encoder settings are reliable. | Review the exact Stream health/status message and check the current YouTube settings table for the configured codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| Dashboard looks healthy, but viewers report a problem | Inspect the public watch page and test playback on mobile; a healthy incoming feed does not establish the experience on every device. | Compare viewer playback with the Live Control Room preview and the replay software’s output. |
| Archive is missing or incomplete | Check the resulting YouTube archive and, if applicable, the local recording. | Remember YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition applies to streams shorter than 12 hours; check local file integrity and whether its size grew during recording. |
