You can ask AI what is on your Google Calendar and, in some setups, create events—but “local AI” does not mean your calendar or its connection is offline. Gemini Apps is Google’s hosted AI option; a local model can instead connect through Google’s remote Calendar MCP server, which is currently in Developer Preview. Choose based on where you want inference to run, what setup you can manage, and how much access you are willing to grant.

Choose the right way to check your schedule

Approach Where the AI runs What it can do Setup and availability
Gemini Apps Google’s Gemini Apps; this is not local inference. Find and manage supported Calendar events. Some details and operations may require editing in Calendar. Connect Google Workspace in Gemini and turn on Keep Activity. Availability and capabilities can depend on the app, account, and platform. Google’s Gemini Apps help
Local model with Google Calendar MCP The model may run on your computer, depending on your chosen client. Google’s MCP endpoint is remote. The official server tools include listing calendars and events, checking availability, and creating, updating, or deleting events. Developer Preview; requires program eligibility, a Google Cloud project, API setup, OAuth, and an MCP client. Google Calendar MCP setup
Calendar interface No AI required. View, create, and edit events directly in Google Calendar. On a computer, click an empty time slot or select Create, enter event details, and save. Google Calendar event help

For a straightforward natural-language question, Gemini is the simpler option if its connected-app feature is available to your account. The MCP route is for people prepared to configure a developer-preview integration and who specifically want to use a local model as the AI client.

Check your schedule with Gemini Apps

  1. Sign in and enable activity. In Gemini Apps, use the same Google account as your calendar and make sure Keep Activity is on. Google says connected calendar apps are unavailable when it is off.
  2. Connect Google Workspace. Follow Gemini’s connected-app instructions. To direct a prompt explicitly to Calendar, include @Google Calendar.
  3. Ask a focused question. Google’s examples include “What’s on my calendar today?”, “When’s my first meeting tomorrow?”, “How many meetings do I have today?”, and “What am I doing this weekend?”
  4. Check the answer against Calendar. Gemini may return incorrect or outdated information, so open the relevant event or day in Calendar when the details matter.

Google’s iOS help describes some actions involving secondary and shared calendars. Its Android help says Gemini cannot create, ask for, or manage events outside the default calendar. Check the current instructions for your app rather than assuming those capabilities are the same on every platform. Gemini Apps connected-app guidance

Add an event with Gemini, then verify it

  1. Give the activity and an unambiguous date and time. For example, specify the date, start time, and event name instead of saying only “tomorrow afternoon.” Google’s example format is: “Create an event for [time] on [day, date] to [activity, task].”
  2. Ask Gemini to add it to your calendar. If the event needs invitees or other precise details, include them in the request where supported.
  3. Open Google Calendar and inspect the saved event. Confirm its title, date, time, calendar, and any other important fields. Some changes—such as adding invitees or changing the location or description of an existing event—may need to be made manually in Calendar.
  4. Undo or correct mistakes promptly. Gemini’s instructions describe Undo for some actions, but actions such as emails already sent to guests cannot be undone. Check the result before relying on it.

Google explicitly warns that “Gemini Apps can hallucinate responses or provide outdated information.” Treat a natural-language confirmation as a convenience, not as proof that an event is correct. Gemini Apps Help

Connect a local model through Google Calendar MCP

Google’s Calendar MCP server exposes calendar tools to compatible AI clients, but it is a remote Google service—not a local calendar database. A model running on your computer can act as the client while calendar requests still travel to Google’s online endpoint. Google labels the server Developer Preview, so availability and setup requirements may change.

What the official MCP tools support

  • List calendars and calendar events.
  • Check availability.
  • Create, update, and delete events.

Google’s setup documentation requires membership in the Workspace Developer Preview Program, a Google Cloud project, enabling the required API and service, OAuth configuration, and an MCP host/client. The page gives configuration instructions for supported clients including Antigravity and Claude. For other clients, Google says the general requirements include its server endpoint, Streamable HTTP transport, and OAuth 2.0 authentication. Consult Google’s current Calendar MCP instructions for eligibility and exact configuration; the feature is explicitly a preview.

The official instructions do not establish a tested Ollama setup or a universal configuration for every local model host. Do not assume that an arbitrary MCP client will work without the required transport and OAuth support.

Grant only the access you intend to use

A connected AI client may be able to read, modify, and delete calendar data. Google advises using trusted tools, reviewing actions, and being cautious with untrusted inputs: malicious content in an event could attempt to manipulate an AI agent. Prefer explicit confirmation before changes and check Calendar after each consequential action. Google Calendar MCP security guidance

Does local AI keep calendar data private?

Not automatically. Running inference locally concerns where the model processes a prompt; it does not make the Google Calendar service or the MCP connection local. Google’s Calendar MCP endpoint is remote, and the cited documentation does not establish that all calendar data remains on your device when an AI client uses it.

Google says Calendar data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and that Calendar content is processed for product functions such as search and defenses against spam or malware. Google also says it does not use Calendar content for advertising: “We don’t use information in apps where you primarily store personal content—including Google Calendar—for advertising purposes, period.” These are Google’s published statements, not a verification of an individual account’s settings. Personal Gmail calendar content is private from others unless shared; work or school administrators may be able to view calendars. Google Calendar privacy and security

Google says calendar information is also stored on-device for offline access. That offline storage does not mean an AI integration operates offline or that a remote service is not involved.

Client-side encryption is not a general consumer switch

Google describes client-side encryption as a feature for eligible Workspace organizations whose administrator enables it. Event descriptions and Meet conference details can be client-side encrypted, while titles and locations retain regular encryption; encrypted descriptions cannot be searched. The cited documentation does not establish compatibility between encrypted event contents and the Gemini or MCP integrations described above. Google Workspace client-side encryption for Calendar

Use Calendar directly when AI is unavailable or unnecessary

On a computer, Google documents two simple ways to add an event: click an empty time slot, enter a title and details, then save; or click Create, enter details, and save. Calendar’s quick-create field can also accept a title and time. These are desktop instructions; the exact mobile interface may differ. Google Calendar event help
