You can also update from a USB drive if the online download fails.
Check which system software version is installed
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System > System Software > Console Information.
- Read the system software version shown on the screen. If Up to date appears below it, Sony says the latest version is installed.
Sony’s current version-check instructions are on its PlayStation system software version support page.
Install an update through the PS5
- Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- If Update Available appears, select Update System Software and follow the on-screen prompts.
You can enable automatic update downloads and installation from the same settings area. The release number changes over time, so check the console’s update screen or Sony’s PS5 system software update page for the version currently offered.
Do not turn off the console while the update installs. Sony warns that interrupting installation can damage the console.

Fix a system software download that is stuck
- Press the PS button to open the control center.
- Open Downloads/Uploads, highlight the system software update, then select View Error Info.
- Choose Try Again.
If downloads repeatedly fail, Sony recommends updating through its PC or Mac USB procedure.
Update the PS5 from a USB drive
Use Sony’s official update file and follow its documented steps. The drive must be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and Sony specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file. This is an alternative to updating online; a USB drive is not needed for the normal console update route.

- On a PC or Mac, format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- At the top level of the drive, create a folder named PS5. Inside it, create another folder named UPDATE.
- Download the update file from Sony’s official PS5 system software page and save it in the UPDATE folder as PS5UPDATE.PUP.
- Turn off the PS5. Press and hold the console’s power button; release it after you hear the second beep to start Safe Mode.
- Connect the USB drive, then select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
If the console does not recognize the update file, check that the folder names and filename match exactly, including capitalization. Sony advises using only its official update file and documented methods.

A routine update installs a newer system software release. Reinstallation is a separate recovery or reset procedure, not the next step for a normal update. Sony warns that reinstalling deletes all data on the PS5, so do not choose a reinstallation option when you only need to install an update. Sony’s Safe Mode system software instructions explain the separate procedures.
