Compare your water bills, then test the meter with all water use stopped. If the meter changes, check toilets, visible plumbing and outdoor irrigation to find the source. These steps can reveal many common leaks before you decide whether to make a simple repair or call a plumber.

Start by checking your water bill

Compare the latest bill with the same month last year rather than only with the previous month. Seasonal changes—especially outdoor watering—can make month-to-month use look unusual even when nothing is wrong. Check the billing period and units, too, because utilities do not all report use the same way.

A sudden increase is a reason to investigate, not proof of a leak. EPA WaterSense says that use above 12,000 gallons per month in winter may indicate a serious leak in a family of four’s home when there is no winter outdoor water use. Treat that as a screening clue, not a universal limit: household size, climate, billing dates and local conditions affect what is typical. EPA WaterSense home-maintenance guidance

Check the meter for water use you cannot see

  1. Stop water use. Turn off faucets and water-using appliances, and make sure irrigation is not running. Avoid using water during the test.
  2. Find and read the meter. In the U.S., meters are commonly near the curb outside or inside the home, such as in a basement. Record the reading and its units; if the meter is difficult to access or unclear, ask your water utility for help.
  3. Wait two hours. Keep all water use off during this period.
  4. Read the meter again. If the reading has changed, water is still flowing somewhere. The meter check does not identify the source, so continue with fixture and plumbing checks. If the result conflicts with your bill or you cannot interpret it, contact the utility.

Test toilets for a silent leak

  1. Put a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet in the toilet tank.
  2. Wait about 10 minutes without flushing.
  3. Look in the bowl. If colored water appears, water is leaking from the tank into the bowl.
  4. Flush after the test to clear the dye and avoid staining.

A worn flapper is a common cause, but a fill valve or another tank component may be responsible. Check whether the flapper is visibly worn; if replacing it does not stop the leak, inspect other components or consult a plumber. If you buy a replacement flapper, confirm it is compatible with your toilet. Food coloring works, so dye tablets are optional. EPA WaterSense home-maintenance guidance

Inspect visible plumbing and outdoor equipment

Look for moisture, drips or signs of water where connections and fixtures meet. Check:

Choose between a repair, a plumber and monitoring

Make a simple repair only when the source is clear

If a toilet leak appears to come from a worn flapper, replacing that part may be a reasonable first step. Some dripping faucet or showerhead-connection repairs may use basic tools or sealing tape. Stop if the leak source is hidden, you are unsure how to make the repair, or water damage is occurring; call a plumber instead. EPA’s repair guidance covers common household leak fixes. Contact the utility when use remains unexplained

If the meter test shows flow but you cannot find the source—or the bill and meter results do not make sense—ask your water utility for help. The utility can also tell you whether it offers leak alerts or other local assistance. Meter access, billing units and available programs vary by location.

Consider a leak device for ongoing alerts

Leak devices are optional; choose one only if ongoing alerts or automatic shutoff are useful enough to justify its cost and installation. EPA describes two broad categories:

One battery can last over 5 years under normal usage, so you can use it with confidence.
Device type What it detects What to consider
Moisture-sensing device Unexpected dampness at the sensor’s location Placement matters; a point sensor may not detect a leak elsewhere.
Flow monitor Water-use patterns that may indicate a leak or another irregularity Check installation needs, plumbing compatibility, alert method and whether the model offers automatic shutoff.

Capabilities differ by model: a device may monitor one location or broader household flow, and alerts or shutoff features are not universal. Compare maintenance and price as well as installation and alert options; EPA’s guidance explains selection considerations but does not name a best brand or model. What a leak can mean for water use

EPA WaterSense estimates that household leaks account for nearly 10,000 gallons of water a year on average, though that figure does not predict how much any one home is losing. EPA also says fixing easily corrected household leaks can save homeowners about 10 percent on water bills. Actual savings depend on the leak, household use and local rates. If you replace a fixture, WaterSense-labeled products are independently certified to use at least 20 percent less water than standard models while performing as well or better, according to EPA’s 2024 release. This applies to qualifying labeled products, not to total household water use. Check the specific product’s current certification and ask your utility whether local incentives are available.
