On a Galaxy S23, open Settings > Connections > SIM manager to see which SIM and eSIM profiles are enabled. In that same screen, set your preferred line separately for calls, text messages, and mobile data; an eSIM appearing in the list does not necessarily mean it is active.

Check whether an eSIM is enabled

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Connections, then SIM manager. Samsung support material may call this screen SIM Card Manager.
  3. Find the eSIM profile in the list and check its control. An enabled profile is available as an active line; a stored profile that is turned off is not currently enabled.
  4. If the profile is off and you intend to use it, turn it on. Activation may require following your carrier’s setup instructions.

Samsung describes SIM Manager as the place to activate or deactivate SIM connections and activate eSIMs. The Galaxy S23 series supports eSIM and mixed physical-SIM-plus-eSIM configurations, but actual availability depends on the device variant, region, and provider. See Samsung’s Galaxy eSIM guidance and its S23-series support information.

Choose the default line for calls, texts, and data

In SIM Manager, use the preferred-line controls—often shown as Preferred SIMs—to select a line for each function. These are independent choices, so the line used for mobile data need not be the one used for calls or texts.

  • Calls: select the line you want the phone to use by default for voice calls.
  • Text messages: select the preferred line for SMS messages.
  • Mobile data: select the line whose plan should normally provide cellular data.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 manual describes Preferred SIMs as a way to select specific SIM cards for functions such as voice calls when two cards are activated. The available choices depend on which lines are enabled. Refer to the Galaxy S23 series user manual.

SAMSUNG Galaxy S23 5G, US Version, 128GB, Phantom Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Galaxy S23 sports a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X flat display with adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a peak brightness high enough for strong outdoor visibility — giving you vibrant, crisp visuals and smooth motion while staying compact.

Use a different line for one call or message

If you want to use the other line just once rather than changing your saved preference, Samsung documents line selection from the Quick Panel and from the Phone or Messages app. The precise control can vary by software version and region. Samsung’s dual-SIM instructions describe these per-action choices.

Decide whether to enable data switching

Data switching or Auto data switching is separate from choosing your normal mobile-data line. When enabled, the phone may use another SIM for data if the preferred line cannot connect. Samsung’s S23 manual warns that this can incur additional charges. Check both plans’ roaming and data terms before turning it on, especially when either line is roaming.

Choose the line that fits how you use the phone

Before setting defaults, compare the lines based on the task rather than treating one line as the universal default:

  • For calls and texts, consider which number you want others to reach and which plan you intend to use.
  • For mobile data, consider coverage where you spend time and the plan’s data or roaming costs.
  • If you want the second line as a fallback, decide whether the possible charges from data switching are acceptable.

Samsung documents the settings and charge warning, but does not recommend a particular carrier or plan.

If the eSIM is missing or will not activate

  • Confirm compatibility: eSIM support can depend on your exact Galaxy S23 model or regional variant, your provider, and your region.
  • Confirm service and activation: an eSIM needs carrier service; activation may involve a carrier-provided QR code or other carrier instructions.
  • Check the profile’s state: a profile can be stored but disabled. Look in SIM Manager rather than assuming that every listed profile is currently active.
  • Interpret “Emergency calls only” carefully: Samsung says this may appear when there is no active eSIM or physical SIM. It does not, by itself, identify which eSIM is enabled.
  • Allow for menu differences: Samsung’s materials use both “SIM manager” and “SIM Card Manager,” and screens can differ with model, software, and provider.

For activation and compatibility, consult Samsung’s eSIM instructions and your carrier’s setup guidance. For regional or model-specific limits, see Samsung’s dual-SIM support page.
