For a move to Xbox Series X or Series S, check each game by its exact title in Xbox’s backward-compatibility library, then account for whether you own it digitally or on disc. Check accessories by exact model and connection type. One crucial difference: Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot play physical game discs.
Start with the console you plan to buy
This guide covers compatibility with Xbox Series X and Series S. Xbox’s published compatibility information does not establish that every game or accessory works across every Xbox generation or every current accessory model.
- Series X: Has a disc drive, so supported physical games can be used. The title must still be compatible.
- Series S: Digital-only. It cannot read Xbox game discs, even when a disc version of the title is backward compatible.
If your library is on discs, factor in the Series S limitation before choosing a console. Xbox’s backward-compatibility page explains the disc and digital rules.
Check whether the exact game is supported
Xbox says most Xbox One games work on Series X|S, but that is not a guarantee for every Xbox One title. Xbox 360 and Original Xbox backward compatibility covers selected games. Search for each title in Xbox’s backward-compatible games library; use its generation filters and consult the excluded-games information rather than assuming support from a franchise or console generation.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Identify whether the game is an Xbox One, Xbox 360, or Original Xbox title.
- Search for the exact game in the official library and confirm it is listed as playable.
- If it is absent or listed among excluded games, do not count on it working through backward compatibility.
Support does not necessarily mean every feature behaves identically. Xbox notes that features vary by game and a download is required. Its FAQ also says Original Xbox online Xbox Live services and in-game marketplaces are unavailable during backward-compatible play.
Check how you own the game
Digital games
Supported digital games associated with your account appear in the console’s Ready to Install section. Select the title to download it. Backward compatibility for supported games you already own does not have an extra charge, although other requirements may apply.

Disc games
On a disc-drive console, insert a supported game disc to download the game data. Keep the disc in the drive whenever you play; it serves as the license to launch the game. A Series S cannot use the disc at all, so a physical copy does not become playable simply because the title is supported.

Backward compatibility itself is free for supported games already owned. Xbox says online console multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass, sold separately; check the game and subscription terms for the service you intend to use.

Verify each accessory by model and connection
Do not assume that an accessory works because it was made for an Xbox. Record the product’s exact model, whether it is officially licensed, how it connects, and whether it needs a firmware update. Then compare those details with the packaging or the manufacturer’s current support page.
In a September 2020 Xbox Wire article, Xbox said officially licensed Xbox One accessories connected by wire or wirelessly via USB work on Xbox Series X. The article separately says headsets connected through the Xbox Wireless Controller’s 3.5 mm port are supported, and cautions that some optical-cable headsets may need a firmware update. That guidance is specifically scoped to Series X and dates from 2020; it is not a blanket confirmation for every accessory, connection, or current model. See Xbox Wire’s accessory compatibility guidance, then confirm your exact product with its maker.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Write down the destination model: Series X or Series S.
- For every game, record its generation and search the exact title in Xbox’s backward-compatibility library and excluded-games information.
- Mark each game as digital or disc-owned. If it is a disc, make sure the destination console has a disc drive.
- For every accessory, note its exact model, license status, connection type, and firmware requirements.
- Compare the accessory details with the manufacturer’s current support information; use Xbox’s 2020 guidance as a Series X reference, not a guarantee for all products.
- Check whether the features you depend on—especially online services or a headset’s audio connection—are available for that specific game and setup.
