To check, identify the exact satellite feature you need, then verify your phone model, software, country, and carrier against the relevant official requirements. Emergency SOS by satellite and everyday satellite messaging are separate capabilities: support for one does not establish support for the other.
First, identify the satellite feature you need
“Satellite support” can mean several different things. Emergency SOS is intended to contact emergency services or an emergency relay when ordinary network access is unavailable. Routine satellite messaging is for communicating with selected contacts; it may be a phone-maker feature or a carrier service. Location sharing and access to selected apps may also have separate eligibility rules.
Before checking compatibility, decide whether you need emergency SOS, ordinary SMS or iMessage, carrier satellite texting, location sharing, or app access. Also check whether the service supports emergency voice calls: messaging support alone does not imply that it does.

Check your phone’s model and software
Find the precise model name in your phone’s About settings, then compare it with the requirements for the exact service. A family name alone may not be enough: carrier eligibility lists can distinguish models or indicate that availability is still forthcoming.

iPhone: Messages via satellite
Apple says Messages via satellite requires an iPhone 14 or later, an active SIM, and a supported iOS version. Its cited requirements are iOS 18 or later in the United States, Canada, and Japan, and iOS 18.4 or later in Mexico. To use iMessage by satellite, turn on iMessage before leaving mobile and Wi-Fi coverage. Satellite SMS depends on the network provider and may incur provider fees. See Apple’s Messages via satellite requirements.
To find the feature when you are away from mobile and Wi-Fi coverage, open Settings and tap Satellite, or open Control Centre, tap Mobile Data, then Satellite, and select Messages via satellite. If mobile or Wi-Fi coverage is available, the Satellite option in Settings will not appear; Control Centre opens the Satellite Connection Demo instead. Apple notes that satellite messages can take longer and that photos, videos, audio messages, stickers, and group messages are unavailable. See Apple’s instructions and feature limits.

Do not use Messages requirements as proof that Emergency SOS via satellite is available to you. Apple treats Emergency SOS, roadside assistance, Find My, and Messages as distinct satellite features, with availability varying by service. Check the relevant feature and your country or region separately.
Google Pixel: Satellite SOS
Google lists Satellite SOS on Pixel devices from Pixel 9 onward, excluding Pixel 9a. This establishes eligibility for the emergency feature, not general-purpose satellite texting. Google lists the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and supported countries in Europe and elsewhere, but cautions that “The table doesn’t guarantee coverage.” Check Google’s Satellite SOS availability information for the current country details.

On a Pixel, open Settings → Safety & emergency → Satellite SOS to check status or start the demo. Google says setup involves required software and API updates and registration with the satellite network. Google Messages must be the default messaging app for Satellite SOS. A clear view of the sky is needed; trees, terrain, buildings, and other conditions can block or delay a connection. See Google’s setup and troubleshooting guidance and its Satellite SOS instructions.
Check carrier satellite services separately
A phone maker’s feature list does not establish that a carrier satellite service will work on your line. Carriers set their own eligible-device lists, regions, plans, supported apps, and message limits. Check the carrier’s current device and coverage information for your specific model and service.

| Service example | What to verify | Important limits stated by the provider |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon (United States) | Verizon lists selected Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models for its Satellite SOS and messaging service. Check the Verizon Satellite SOS and messaging FAQ for current eligibility. | Google Messages must be the default Android messaging app, and the phone needs line of sight to the satellite. The cited FAQ says MMS, RCS, and attachments are unsupported; it supports basic two-way text. |
| O2 Business | O2 Business publishes a separate list of selected iPhone, Samsung, and Pixel models and supported apps. See O2 Satellite information. | O2 describes messaging, location sharing, and certain apps. Its FAQ says standard voice calls, including emergency calls, are not supported. |
| Rogers | Rogers publishes its own satellite-to-mobile device list. Check Rogers’ device and service information. | Some models on the list may be marked “Coming soon,” so a listing does not necessarily mean the feature is already available for that model. |
These examples show why “my phone supports satellite” is not a sufficient compatibility check: the carrier, country, plan, app, and exact task all matter.
Use this compatibility checklist
- Name the task. Decide whether you need emergency SOS, ordinary SMS or iMessage, carrier satellite texting, location sharing, or app access.
- Identify the exact handset. Find the model name in the phone’s About settings and compare it with the maker’s or carrier’s list, including rollout notes such as “Coming soon.”
- Confirm setup requirements. Check the required operating-system version, active SIM if applicable, default messaging app, and any registration or activation steps.
- Check country, carrier, and coverage. Confirm that the specific service is offered in your country and by your carrier, then check the carrier’s current coverage information. A country or device list alone does not guarantee a connection at a particular location.
- Try the official demo if available. Pixel’s Satellite SOS settings include a demo; Apple provides a Satellite Connection Demo. A demo helps you learn the interface, but it does not prove coverage in every place or circumstance.
What compatibility lists and demos can—and cannot—tell you
An eligible model and an available service are necessary checks, not a promise that a satellite connection will succeed at a specific spot. For Pixel, Google explicitly says its country table does not guarantee coverage. The clear-sky requirement and possible obstruction from trees, terrain, or buildings also matter. Verify both the service rules and the conditions where you expect to use it.
The cited official sources do not establish a comparable cross-service reliability statistic, so there is no defensible shared success rate to use when comparing these services. Follow the provider’s current coverage guidance rather than treating a support list as a reception guarantee.
If your phone does not offer the feature you need
A standalone satellite communicator is a separate option, not a way to enable satellite service on an unsupported phone. Garmin describes the inReach Mini 2 as supporting two-way messages and interactive SOS through satellite networks; satellite features require an active subscription. See Garmin’s inReach Mini 2 announcement and Garmin’s subscription information.
