Check eSIM support and carrier-unlocked status separately: a phone can have eSIM hardware but still be locked to the carrier that sold it. Confirm your exact model and regional variant with its manufacturer, check the lock status in your phone’s settings or with its carrier, then ask the carrier you want to use to verify eSIM eligibility using the phone’s model and IMEI or device ID.
1. Check whether your exact phone model supports eSIM
Start with the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and regional variant—not just the phone family name. eSIM support can vary by model, purchase region, and carrier. Manufacturer documentation is the best place to confirm whether the device has eSIM capability.
On a Google Pixel
Google says a Pixel needs an EID (Embedded Identity Document) number to use an eSIM. Find it at Settings > About phone > SIM status. An EID is a useful sign that the phone has eSIM capability, but it does not guarantee that a particular carrier will accept the device.

Google’s Pixel guidance says Pixel 4 and later support eSIM, while older models have exceptions based on the carrier or country where they were purchased. Check Google’s model-specific information rather than applying this guidance to all Android phones: Google Pixel Help: Get a SIM or eSIM and add it to your Pixel phone.

On other Android phones
Android manufacturers do not share one universal settings path or compatibility rule. Check the support information for your exact phone model and region. If it is unclear, ask the manufacturer or intended carrier whether that specific device supports eSIM.
2. Check whether the phone is carrier-unlocked
eSIM capability and unlock status are separate. An eSIM-capable phone may still be restricted to the carrier that sold it.

On an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Look for Carrier Lock. If it says No SIM restrictions, Apple considers the iPhone unlocked.
If that wording is absent, contact the iPhone’s current carrier to ask whether the phone is locked and eligible for unlocking. Apple says only the current carrier can unlock an iPhone; a request may take a few days to complete. See Apple Support: How to unlock your iPhone for use with a different carrier.
On Android
Do not assume that a particular Android menu path or status message applies to every manufacturer. Check the device maker’s instructions, or ask the carrier that sold the phone whether it is locked and eligible for unlocking. If the status remains unclear, have the current carrier check the lock and the intended carrier check device eligibility.

3. Ask the intended carrier to verify activation eligibility
Even if the phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, the carrier you want to use must support eSIM and accept that exact device. Give the carrier the phone’s precise model and its IMEI or device ID, and ask it to confirm eSIM availability and eligibility before you try to activate service. Google likewise recommends checking eSIM support with the carrier and confirming the device ID: Google Pixel Help: Set up a new eSIM.
Carrier requirements can differ. For example, Verizon’s Android eSIM activation guidance calls for an eSIM-compatible, unlocked device; that is Verizon-specific guidance, not a rule that applies to every carrier. See Verizon Support: Android Device – Join Verizon using eSIM.

What to do if a check is inconclusive
- No EID or unclear manufacturer information: Confirm eSIM capability with the manufacturer for the exact model and region.
- iPhone does not show “No SIM restrictions”: Ask the current carrier whether it is locked and whether it can be unlocked.
- Android lock status is unclear: Ask the current carrier about the lock, then ask the intended carrier to check eSIM eligibility using the IMEI or device ID.
- eSIM activation fails: Contact the network provider. Apple also recommends contacting the provider when an eSIM activation issue occurs; see Apple Support: If you see Invalid SIM or No SIM on your iPhone or iPad.
Successfully activating an eSIM with one carrier does not prove that the phone will work with every other carrier.
