Check the exact model number of your phone, compare its published 5G bands with the carrier’s device information, and then run that carrier’s IMEI compatibility checker. A band match alone does not confirm that the carrier will accept the phone, that it is unlocked, or that the service is available where you use it.
What to check before switching carriers
Phones sold under the same product-family name can have different radio specifications depending on their model number, region, or carrier variant. Start with the specific handset you plan to activate, rather than searching only for its brand and family name.
- Find the exact model number. Check the phone’s settings, its device label, or its original packaging. Note the regional or carrier variant if it is listed.
- Look up its published bands. Use the manufacturer’s technical specifications for that exact variant, then compare them with the target carrier’s official device information. A generic search result for the product family may describe a different version.
- Check the band for the service you want. Carrier labels such as “5G,” “5G+,” and “Ultra Wideband” are not interchangeable. Confirm which bands apply to the particular service and carrier.
- Run the carrier’s IMEI checker. Use the result for the exact phone you intend to activate; do not rely on a band list alone.
- Confirm the remaining conditions. Check lock status, any model-approval or software requirements, plan eligibility, and coverage at the places that matter to you.
How the checks differ by carrier
AT&T: check n77 for mid-band 5G+
AT&T says that its 5G service requires a 5G-capable device and that its ultra-fast mid-band 5G+ service requires band n77. Its 5G information directs customers to find their device on AT&T’s site to check support. AT&T’s device comparison pages also distinguish regular 5G bands from the subset it identifies as supported for 5G+.
Compare the exact phone variant’s specifications with AT&T’s device information, then use AT&T’s device search and BYOD information. Finding n77 in the specifications is relevant to mid-band 5G+, but it does not by itself establish that AT&T will approve the phone for activation.

T-Mobile: use the IMEI checker for compatibility and lock status
T-Mobile’s bring-your-own-phone page provides an IMEI checker. T-Mobile describes checking the IMEI as its fastest and most accurate way to determine network compatibility and whether a device is locked or unlocked. Enter the IMEI for the handset you plan to use and follow the live result.
Do not infer compatibility with every T-Mobile 5G service tier from a general band list. Confirm the exact phone with the checker and consult T-Mobile’s current device information for the service you want.

Verizon: check the IMEI and the specific service
Verizon’s bring-your-own-device page asks for an IMEI to confirm network compatibility. Verizon describes 5G Ultra Wideband as using mid-band C-band and high-band mmWave, but that description does not approve a particular phone. Check the actual device and its IMEI before relying on access to Ultra Wideband.

Why a band match is not the same as carrier compatibility
A phone needs radio support for the relevant bands to use the corresponding radio layer, but a published band match answers only part of the question. The carrier’s device check addresses whether it will accept the handset on its network; T-Mobile’s checker also reports lock status. Neither a band list nor a compatibility result promises coverage at a particular address or access to every network feature.

- Band support: Does the exact phone variant list the band needed for the service?
- Carrier acceptance: Does the carrier’s live IMEI checker confirm compatibility?
- Lock status: Is the phone unlocked, or can it be unlocked before activation?
- Service availability: Does the carrier offer the relevant service where you intend to use it?
- Other conditions: Are there stated software, approval, plan, or activation requirements?
What to compare when choosing a replacement phone
Before buying, compare candidates by exact model number and variant. Keep the published band information separate from the carrier’s acceptance result; neither substitutes for the other.
| Check | What to record |
|---|---|
| Phone identity | Exact model number, regional or carrier variant |
| Relevant 5G bands | Whether the exact variant lists the bands needed for the carrier service you want |
| Carrier acceptance | The official carrier IMEI-check result for that handset |
| Lock status | Whether the phone is unlocked or eligible to be unlocked |
| Other requirements | Any stated software, model-approval, plan, or activation conditions |
| Local service | Whether the desired service is available where you use the phone |
If your current handset lacks the relevant radio support or fails the carrier’s compatibility check, compare replacement phones by exact variant and rerun the intended carrier’s checker before purchase. An unlocked phone with n77 is not automatically compatible with all three carriers.

If the phone does not pass the check
- Verify that you entered the IMEI for the same phone and variant whose specifications you reviewed.
- Check whether the handset is locked and whether it can be unlocked.
- Look for carrier-specific approval, software, plan, or activation requirements in the checker result and official device information.
- If the issue is a missing band or unsupported model, compare another exact phone variant and check its IMEI before buying.
- If the phone is accepted but the service is unavailable where you need it, review the carrier’s local coverage and service details; compatibility does not establish local coverage.
Carrier band deployments, device catalogs, approval lists, and software requirements can change. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications and the carrier’s live checker immediately before making a purchase or activation decision.
