Check the exact game’s current system requirements, then compare them with your PC’s CPU, graphics card, RAM, Windows version, DirectX support and available storage. Use the minimum requirements as a baseline, not a promise of high settings or smooth performance; for that, look for a recommended tier or an explicit resolution and frame-rate target.
1. Find the requirements for the exact game
Open the game’s publisher page or its listing on the store where you plan to buy it. Make sure the requirements apply to the edition and platform you intend to use, then note the minimum and recommended specs separately. Requirements vary by game, even within the survival-horror genre. For example, Returnal’s Steam listing gives distinct minimum and recommended hardware and storage requirements.
Record the details that apply to your comparison:
- Operating system and, if specified, whether 64-bit architecture is required
- Processor (CPU) model
- Graphics card (GPU) model and any stated video memory (VRAM)
- System memory (RAM)
- DirectX version or other required graphics features
- Required free storage space, and storage type if specified
- Any resolution, graphics-setting or frame-rate target attached to a requirement tier
2. Check your Windows PC’s components
Use DirectX Diagnostic Tool for graphics and DirectX details
- Open the Windows search box, type
dxdiag, and open DirectX Diagnostic Tool. - On the System tab, check your Windows details, processor, memory and DirectX version.
- Inspect the display information for the graphics device. If more than one adapter appears, note each model; a PC with integrated and dedicated graphics may have both.
- Select Save All Information if you want a report to review or use when asking for help.
Microsoft describes DxDiag as a tool for reporting DirectX components and drivers, and says a game might not work properly if the required DirectX version is missing: Microsoft’s DxDiag instructions and DirectX version guidance.
Use System Information to cross-check
Search Windows for msinfo32 and open System Information to see a broader view of your hardware, system components and software environment. Microsoft cautions that some driver-status information can be misleading if you run the tool without administrator privileges. See Microsoft’s System Information guidance.

3. Compare your PC with the game’s requirements
Match each listed item with the corresponding PC detail rather than judging by one component alone. Check the operating-system version and architecture, CPU model, GPU model and VRAM if listed, system RAM, DirectX requirement, and available disk space. A game may use a dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics, so identify which adapter it is likely to use.
Do not assume that processors or graphics cards with similar names—or from the same generation—perform alike. If the game lists a component “or equivalent,” treat that as a comparison you still need to verify, not proof that a vaguely similar model qualifies. Check the publisher’s support information for your exact model or ask the publisher’s support team.

4. Read minimum and recommended specs as different targets
Minimum requirements are a baseline for compatibility, not a guarantee of high graphics settings, a particular resolution or a specific frame rate. Recommended requirements may be more relevant if you want a smoother or higher-quality experience, but look for an explicit performance target whenever the publisher provides one.
For a game-specific example—not a rule for survival horror generally—an official Batman: Arkham Knight update associated minimum settings with 1280×720 and an expected 30 fps (capped), and recommended settings with 1920×1080 and an expected 30 fps (capped). Targets like these make the intended experience clearer than a hardware list alone.

5. Resolve a close match before you buy
If one of your components is near or below the listed requirement, or the store page is unclear, search the publisher’s support site for that game and your exact hardware model. You can also send support a component list or a DxDiag report. Review the report before sharing it publicly, since it contains details about your PC.
Because no specific game or PC configuration is named here, there is no reliable pass-or-fail verdict or justified upgrade recommendation. To get a direct comparison, use the game’s current requirements alongside your CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version and available storage. An upgrade only makes sense after identifying a specific mismatch and confirming that the part is compatible with your PC.
