To check support, identify your motherboard’s exact model and hardware revision, then find the Ryzen 7 5800X3D in that model’s official CPU support list. The listing gives the minimum BIOS version; compare it with the version currently installed. A compatible chipset is a useful first clue, but only the board-specific listing confirms support.
1. Identify the exact motherboard model and revision
Find the full product name and, where applicable, the hardware revision. Check the lettering printed on the motherboard itself, its packaging or invoice, or the system information available on your PC. Do not identify the board from its chipset alone: manufacturers can have different support entries for boards that use the same chipset.
2. Check the manufacturer’s CPU support list
- Open the motherboard maker’s official support page for the exact model and revision.
- Open the page’s CPU support list or CPU compatibility section.
- Search the list for Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Match the full board name, including any suffix or revision distinction shown in the list.
- Record the minimum BIOS version listed for that processor.
For example, ASRock’s CPU support list shows the 5800X3D for the X570 Steel Legend with BIOS P3.90. NZXT’s CPU support list shows BIOS P1.70 for the N7 B550; that document is dated 2024-11-08. These are examples for those exact boards only, not BIOS requirements that can be applied to other models. See the ASRock X570 Steel Legend CPU support list and NZXT N7 B550 CPU support information.

3. Compare the required BIOS with the installed version
Check the BIOS version shown in UEFI setup or your system information, then compare it with the version in the board’s CPU support entry. If the installed version is older than the listed minimum, update the BIOS before installing the processor. Follow the instructions on the support page for your exact board and download firmware only from that page; update procedures vary between models. ASUS likewise directs users to the respective motherboard support pages for UEFI updates: ASUS motherboard BIOS update guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Powerful Gaming Performance
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 3" architecture
- 4.8 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 36 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the AMD Socket AM4 platform, with PCIe 4.0 support
- AMD Wraith Prism Cooler with RGB LED included
4. Use the chipset list as a filter—not proof
AMD specifies the Ryzen 7 5800X3D for Socket AM4 and lists X570, X470, B550, B450, and A520 among its supporting chipsets. That list can help narrow your search, but it does not confirm support for every motherboard using one of those chipsets. Check the exact model’s CPU list and BIOS requirement. AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D specifications provide the socket and chipset information.
5. Check cooling before you install the CPU
Compatibility is not the only upgrade consideration. AMD lists a 105 W default TDP and a 90°C maximum operating temperature (Tjmax) for the processor. No thermal solution is included, and AMD says, “Liquid cooler recommended for optimal performance.” That recommendation does not mean every air cooler is unsuitable; check your particular cooler’s capacity and mounting compatibility. These specifications and recommendations are on AMD’s product page, which lists a launch date of 2022-04-20.
