Check the specifications and manual for your exact computer or motherboard model, then read the entry for the specific M.2 slot. Look for an explicit interface or mode: PCIe, SATA, or both. “M.2” describes a family of form factors; the label alone does not tell you which protocol a slot supports.

1. Identify the exact computer or motherboard

For a prebuilt PC or laptop, find the full system model on its product label or in system information, then use the manufacturer’s support page. For a custom-built desktop, identify the motherboard model from its printed board marking or system information and go to the motherboard maker’s support page. Match the board revision if the manufacturer lists one; specifications can differ between revisions.

2. Find the entry for the specific M.2 slot

Open the official specifications and user manual for that exact model. Search for “M.2,” the slot name (for example, M.2_1), “PCIe,” “NVMe,” “SATA,” and “Key M.” Read the slot’s full description and any footnotes, not just the overview or a headline specification.

PCI-SIG describes M.2 as a family of form factors, which is why the connector name is not enough to establish protocol support. See the PCI Express M.2 overview.

  • IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption

3. Interpret the interface or mode

  • PCIe: The slot supports a PCIe M.2 device. NVMe SSDs use PCIe, but confirm any stated generation, lane width, or other restrictions in the slot entry.
  • SATA or SATA mode: The slot supports an M.2 device using SATA signaling.
  • PCIe and SATA: If the documentation explicitly lists both modes for that particular slot, it supports both interface classes, subject to the manual’s other restrictions.

Do not infer compatibility from the connector’s appearance or from the fact that another M.2 slot on the same board supports a given mode. If the specification is unclear, ask the system or motherboard maker before choosing a drive.

Why the exact slot entry matters

M.2 slots on one board can differ in protocol, speed, and supported length. For example, ASUS lists two Key M slots on the PRIME H610M-E D4 specifications page: M.2_1 supports PCIe 3.0 x4, while M.2_2 supports PCIe 3.0 x2. Both entries list 2242, 2260, and 2280 module types. The board’s general specifications should not be treated as applying identically to every slot.

Mode can also vary between slots on the same motherboard. The ROG MAXIMUS XII FORMULA manual lists M.2_1 for PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA mode, while M.2_2 and M.2_3 are listed for PCIe 3.0 x4 mode. Follow the entry for the slot you intend to use.

4. Check length, platform restrictions, and shared resources

Module length

Check the supported type numbers, such as 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110, and make sure the corresponding mounting position is present. Protocol compatibility does not guarantee that a drive will physically fit.

Processor and platform conditions

Read footnotes for processor-generation or platform qualifications. In the PRIME Z690-P manual, processor generation affects M.2_1 availability or mode; the manual separately lists M.2_3 for PCIe 4.0 x4 and SATA modes. A slot’s capability may therefore depend on the installed processor.

Shared bandwidth and disabled ports

Some boards share resources between M.2 slots, PCIe expansion slots, or SATA ports. The manual may state that using an M.2 slot in a particular mode disables a SATA port or changes available bandwidth. Check these notes alongside the slot description so you know what else may be affected by installing the drive.

5. Choose a drive only after comparing the constraints

What to verify What the documentation needs to establish
Protocol Whether the exact slot supports PCIe, SATA, or both
Physical length Supported module type, such as 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110
PCIe capability Generation and lane width, if stated for that slot
Platform conditions Any processor or system configuration qualifications
Shared resources Any reduced bandwidth or ports disabled in a particular configuration

Choose an M.2 NVMe SSD only when the slot supports PCIe/NVMe, and an M.2 SATA SSD only when the slot explicitly supports SATA mode. Check length and the manual’s sharing notes before buying; a board’s highest advertised PCIe generation does not necessarily apply to every M.2 slot.
