For a U.S. address, start with FEMA’s Map Service Center to find the effective flood map, then check regional subsidence information from the USGS and relevant state or local agencies. These tools answer different questions: FEMA maps mapped flood hazards for communities, while subsidence resources track ground movement across regions or monitoring locations. Neither one alone determines whether a particular building is safe or will flood.
How do I check if my home is in a flood zone?
- Search the exact address in FEMA’s Map Service Center. FEMA is the official public source for the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) used for flood insurance purposes. If you cannot locate the address, ask the local floodplain administrator or contact FEMA’s Mapping and Insurance eXchange (FMIX) through FEMA’s map resources.
- Open the applicable FIRM, panel, or FIRMette. Record the displayed flood zone, map panel identifier, and effective date. The effective date matters because maps are updated over time.
- Ask the local floodplain administrator if the result is unclear. The administrator can help interpret the effective panel and explain whether a map update is pending.
The map classifies mapped community flood hazard; it does not establish whether a building has flooded before or predict with certainty whether it will flood in the future.
What is my flood zone, and what does it mean?
Report the exact zone shown on the effective map. FEMA/NFIP map presentations include several categories: A- and V-family zones are high-risk mapped areas; B and X indicate moderate risk in applicable presentations; C and X indicate lower risk; and D means risk has not been determined. Because X can appear in different risk descriptions, do not reduce every X result to one blanket label.
A lower or moderate mapped classification is not a guarantee against flooding. The NFIP reports that 29% of its flood claims during 2014–2024 came from outside current high-risk areas. That is a program-wide historical share, not a prediction for an individual property. Map updates, development, terrain, erosion, weather patterns, levees, and dams can all affect the mapped picture. The NFIP states: “There is still a risk of flooding in areas with low or moderate flood risk.” See NFIP guidance on flood risk.

How can I check for land subsidence near my home?
Look for regional evidence from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), your state or local geological survey, groundwater agency, or subsidence district. Start with the USGS land-subsidence overview, then check for a local program. USGS resources include interactive data for California and regional monitoring information for Houston-Galveston, Texas; their coverage is not a universal address-level determination.
USGS defines land subsidence as “a gradual settling or sudden sinking of the Earth’s surface due to removal or displacement of subsurface earth materials.” Causes include compaction of aquifers after groundwater withdrawal, drainage of organic soils, underground mining, and natural collapse such as sinkholes. Gradual regional movement may be difficult to see at one property.

- Help prevent costly water damage — Sends alerts the moment water is detected.
- Early warning for freezing temps — Notifies you when temps drop below 40°F to help avoid frozen pipes.
- Protect high-risk areas — Place near sinks, water heaters, washing machines, or other leak-prone spots.
- No base station required — connects over Amazon Sidewalk for simple, flexible coverage throughout your home and beyond (Amazon Sidewalk required for use; coverage may vary).
USGS reports that more than 17,000 square miles across 45 U.S. states have been directly affected by subsidence, and that more than 80% of identified U.S. subsidence has resulted from groundwater use. These are national context figures, not estimates of the likelihood that a particular home is affected. USGS says the tool used to detect and map land-surface deformation is interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR); such monitoring can show ground movement over an area, but does not inspect an individual foundation.

| Tool or source | Coverage and spatial detail | Purpose and timing | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| FEMA Map Service Center and effective FIRM | Official U.S. flood map, searchable by address and represented on map panels | Shows mapped flood-zone classification; check the panel’s effective date | Does not prove a building has flooded, guarantee future safety, or show every local drainage condition |
| USGS and state or local subsidence resources | Regional areas, wells, or monitoring locations; availability and detail vary by region | Shows subsidence evidence or monitored ground movement over a stated period | Does not provide a universal parcel-level determination or assess a specific foundation |
Use FEMA/NFIP for the official insurance-related flood map. Use USGS and state or local technical agencies for subsidence science, and local floodplain officials for applying maps to a specific location. A commercial risk score is not interchangeable with an effective FEMA map unless its methods and limitations are clear.

- NO SETUP REQUIRED - PLACE AND PROTECT: The Flood Buzz Small has a factory-installed, pre-tested battery sealed inside - no battery installation, no tools, no app. Open the box, set each unit on the floor near any water connection, and your home is protected from the first drip. Done in seconds.
- UP TO 95 dB ALARM RIGHT AT THE SOURCE: Flood Buzz Small delivers up to 95 dB at the leak location, comparable to an alarm clock. Best results come from placing it close to the water source inside an enclosed cabinet or under a sink. For whole-floor coverage, place two units together or upgrade to Flood Buzz Pro at 110 dB.
- FACTORY-SEALED BATTERY - UP TO 3 YEARS ACTIVE LIFE: The internal 12V battery is sealed at the factory and is not user-replaceable. This is a design feature: no battery compartment means no accidental installation errors. Each unit has a replace-by date stamped on the housing - your built-in reminder to swap in a fresh unit when protection is due for renewal.
- ALERTS AT THE FIRST DRIP - BEFORE WATER SPREADS: The moment water contacts the two metal prongs on the base, Flood Buzz sounds the alarm. Place prongs flat on the floor in the most likely path of a leak - directly behind a toilet, under a supply line, or at the low point of a drain pan - for fastest response to even a slow drip.
- PROTECT AGAINST $5,000+ IN WATER DAMAGE FOR UNDER $8 A SENSOR: A supply-line failure under a kitchen sink can lead to $5,000 or more in repairs, flooring replacement, and water damage restoration. This 6-pack covers three high-risk locations in your home, business, or RV for roughly $9 per sensor - protection that pays for itself at the first catch.
When should you seek a property-specific assessment?
Flood elevation or map interpretation
If the building’s height relative to expected floodwater matters, ask whether an elevation certificate already exists. An elevation certificate records building and first-floor elevation information and can help assess risk and insurance. A surveyor, engineer, or architect can prepare one; see the NFIP elevation-certificate guidance. For map-panel questions or pending changes, contact the local floodplain administrator.
Possible building movement
A regional subsidence map cannot determine whether a particular foundation is moving. New or widening cracks, uneven floors, or suspected ground collapse warrant assessment by an appropriately qualified local structural or geotechnical professional. Do not diagnose structural movement from a map or a symptom list alone.

Does a low-risk flood zone mean my home cannot flood?
No. A low- or moderate-risk map designation does not mean flooding is impossible, and a map may not capture every local drainage issue or future condition. The NFIP claim figure above illustrates residual risk across the program, not the odds for your address. Subsidence tools have a separate limitation: lack of a nearby viewer or monitoring result is not evidence that subsidence is absent.
How does the map affect flood insurance?
For a property in a Special Flood Hazard Area within a participating NFIP community, a federally backed mortgage triggers the federal mandatory-purchase requirement. Most homeowners policies do not cover flood damage. A lower-risk map result alone does not establish that flood insurance is unnecessary, and a lender may impose its own terms. Confirm the property and loan conditions with your lender and discuss coverage with an insurance professional. For NFIP participation and eligibility information, see NFIP flood-insurance eligibility.
