Does the HP OmniBook 5 really last 42 hours? HP advertises up to 42 hours for local video playback under a specific test protocol—not for typical browsing, streaming, gaming, or mixed work. You can check a particular laptop’s battery condition and capacity in Windows, but to verify its runtime you must time a playback test and record the conditions.
What HP’s 42-hour claim means
HP announced the OmniBook 5 with “up to 42 hours” of local video playback. Its published test used continuous full-screen FHD video at 1920×1080 and 200 nits brightness. The video played from local storage; wireless was on but not connected. System audio was at the image default, player audio was at 100%, and sound came through attached headphones or the speakers if there was no audio jack. HP’s launch announcement says results vary by configuration and battery capacity decreases with time and use.

HP OmniBook 5 16” Touchscreen AI Laptop – Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD,... | $978.00 | Buy on Amazon |
The OmniBook 5 product page likewise describes the figure as “up to 42 hours of local video playback.” “Up to” is a manufacturer’s best-case claim under its stated conditions, not a guarantee for every configuration or a forecast of ordinary use.
Check the specific laptop’s battery
1. Identify its configuration
Record the exact OmniBook 5 model or product number, processor, display, and battery condition. HP says runtime can vary by configuration, so a result from one unit should not be treated as representative of the entire line.

2. Run HP Battery Check
- In Windows, open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows.
- Select Component Tests → Power → Battery Check, then run the test.
- Review the result and, if needed, open Test Logs.
HP says Battery Check takes about two minutes. Results such as Passed, Weak, Very Weak, or Replace indicate battery condition; they do not establish whether the laptop can run for 42 hours. If Windows diagnostics are unavailable, HP also documents checking the battery through UEFI diagnostics. Screens can vary by software version. See HP’s Battery Check instructions.
3. Generate a Windows battery report
On Windows 11, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
powercfg /batteryreport
Windows creates an HTML report and prints its location. Microsoft recommends beginning with Installed battery, Recent usage, and Battery usage. These sections offer capacity and usage context, not an independent runtime test. See Microsoft’s guidance on battery care in Windows.
Time a playback test to check runtime
If you want to see how long your particular laptop runs, measure it separately. For a result comparable to HP’s published method, use the same conditions as closely as you can:
- Start with the laptop fully charged and note its exact model and configuration.
- Play continuous full-screen 1920×1080 video stored locally.
- Set the display to 200 nits. If you cannot measure brightness in nits, record the setting you used rather than claiming it matches HP’s test.
- Match HP’s audio and wireless setup as closely as possible: system audio at the image default, player audio at 100%, wireless on but not connected, and sound through headphones or the speakers if there is no audio jack.
- Time playback until the laptop shuts down. Record the result and every difference from HP’s setup.
Call the outcome an observed runtime for that unit and protocol. HP’s announcement describes its own test method; the sources cited here do not provide an independent runtime measurement from a retail unit. A test with different brightness, wireless activity, video source, or audio settings is useful as an observation, but it is not a like-for-like check of HP’s claim.
Quick Recap
How to interpret and compare results
- Battery Check: assesses battery condition, not whether runtime reaches 42 hours.
- Battery report: shows capacity and usage history, not a direct reproduction of HP’s test.
- Timed playback: measures one laptop under the conditions you record; it does not establish the result for every OmniBook 5.
- Comparisons between laptops: compare results only when protocols are similar. Note the tested configuration, display brightness, local playback versus streaming, wireless state, audio setup, and whether each figure is a manufacturer claim or an independent measurement. If protocols differ, explain the differences instead of ranking headline hour figures as though they were measured alike.
