To check study notes or flashcards, first try to recall or explain the information without looking, then compare it with the materials your course treats as authoritative—such as lecture slides, assigned readings, or instructor feedback. Mark errors, missing conditions, ambiguity, and unresolved points; correct them with a source reference. If course materials conflict, ask your instructor or a tutor rather than guessing.

Why recall and fact-checking are separate

Being able to remember an answer does not establish that it is true. Retrieval practice helps you see what you can bring to mind; comparing that answer with course materials is what helps you catch inaccuracies and gaps. The University of California San Diego’s Department of Psychology says that more than 200 studies across more than a century of research have demonstrated memory benefits from retrieval practice. That finding concerns memory, not whether any particular note or flashcard contains a correct answer. UC San Diego: Retrieval Practice

A practical workflow for checking study material

  1. Choose a claim to check. Prioritize unfamiliar facts, absolute statements, numbers or dates, formulas, causal explanations, and points you cannot explain. These are useful cues for deciding what to review first, not a guarantee that other claims are error-free.
  2. Try to retrieve it. Close your notes or hide the flashcard answer. Explain the idea in your own words, solve the problem, or answer the prompt from memory. UC San Diego recommends setting course materials aside for recall, then returning to them to check what you remembered. UC San Diego: Retrieval Practice
  3. Compare your answer with a relevant course source. Use lecture slides or recordings, the assigned textbook or reading, course handouts, and instructor-provided answers or feedback as appropriate. Check the source for the exact topic and any conditions or exceptions. Duke recommends creating practice tests from course materials and checking retrieved information against those materials. Duke Academic Resource Center: Retrieval Practice
  4. Label what you found. Mark the claim accurate, inaccurate, incomplete, ambiguous, or unresolved. A correct central idea may still be incomplete if it omits a condition the course expects you to know.
  5. Correct the material and record its source. Rewrite the note or card to match the checked explanation, then add a useful reference such as a page, lecture, or handout. UNSW recommends noting sources and adding questions to notes. UNSW Sydney: Reading, research & note taking
  6. Resolve what remains unclear. Reread the relevant assigned passage or ask your instructor or a tutor. The University of Arkansas recommends those routes for confusing material, followed by correcting the notes. University of Arkansas: Tips for Effective Study
  7. Review the corrected material later. Return to it in later study sessions and test yourself again. University of Delaware gives an example sequence that includes checking recall against notes or slides before making flashcards or collecting questions; Cincinnati also recommends reviewing across several days. These are examples, not a single schedule that suits every course. University of Delaware: Learning Strategies University of Cincinnati: Study Skills for UC’s Online Students

How to check notes

Keep enough context for a note to make sense later: the topic, relevant conditions, definitions, and where the information came from. A brief claim without its context can turn into a misleading rule when you review it.

Do not discard a class point just because you cannot find it in a general textbook. Class notes may preserve information presented in lectures but not elsewhere. Compare the relevant course sources and ask the instructor if a difference matters to your class. UNSW Sydney: Reading, research & note taking

How to check flashcards

Check both sides of a card: make sure the prompt is clear and the answer matches a course source, including any necessary conditions or exceptions. Treat the answer as a claim to verify, not as proof of itself. Duke recommends building flashcards and practice tests from course material and checking answers against it. Duke Academic Resource Center: Retrieval Practice

Choose a format that tests what the course actually asks you to do. A short question-and-answer card can help with recalling a definition or key idea. For application, calculations, or extended reasoning, use a practice problem or write a fuller explanation instead of squeezing the task onto a one-word card. McGill describes practice testing with both short and long questions, including problems; Carnegie Mellon also identifies quizzes, flashcards, and problems as retrieval tasks. What to do when sources disagree

Start with sources that govern your course: the instructor’s materials and assigned readings. Confirm that you are comparing the same topic, definitions, and conditions, and that each source is current for the class. If a lecture, textbook, or handout appears to conflict with another, do not silently choose the version that seems most plausible. Note the difference and ask the instructor or a tutor which explanation applies to the course. Outside explanations can clarify an idea, but check them against course expectations before changing a study answer.

Keep spaced review in its proper role

Spacing study sessions helps organize review over time, but it does not verify the information being reviewed. Correct a claim against course material first; then revisit it in later sessions to strengthen recall. A schedule or flashcard app can prompt review, but neither guarantees that the underlying answer is accurate.
