Assuming by “new PlayStation console” you mean PS5 Pro: Sony says it plays all PS5 games, and its current product page says more than 8,500 PS4 games are playable, with a small number of exceptions. Accessories need separate checks: game generation, disc-drive configuration, connection type and physical fit can all affect whether an item works.
Use the checks below before moving your library or buying an accessory. If you mean another PS5 revision, match the accessory’s exact model against PlayStation’s PS5 Pro compatibility guide or the relevant guidance for that console.

1. Check the exact game and console configuration
Start with the game, not the accessory. Sony’s PS5 Pro product page says, “Yes, the PS5 Pro console can play all PS5 games.” That establishes compatibility, not that every game gets the same performance improvement or Pro enhancement; those benefits are game-specific.
For PS4 games, Sony says PS5 Pro can play more than 8,500 titles, but a small number are incompatible. The figure is from Sony’s current product page, which does not give it a publication year. PlayStation’s PS4 backward-compatibility guidance says the overwhelming majority of 4,000+ PS4 games work on PS5 and notes that some games may show errors or behave unexpectedly, or lack some PS4 features. Check the individual title rather than treating either count as a guarantee for your library.

How to verify a PS4 title
- Search for the title in PlayStation Store. A title that does not work on PS5 is marked “Playable on: PS4 only.”
- Check PlayStation’s backward-compatibility page for the maintained list of PS4-only games and any game-specific limitations.
- If the game relies on a particular PS4 feature or add-on, try the game on the console before buying that add-on. Sony advises testing first because some PS4 features may not be available on PS5.
- Keep the console system software current; compatibility guidance and game behavior can change with updates.
2. Check whether you need a disc drive
A physical PS4 game disc requires a PS5 Pro configuration with a compatible disc drive, and the disc must stay inserted while you play. Before relying on your disc collection, check whether the specific Pro configuration you are buying includes a drive or requires the compatible add-on. Sony lists a PS5 Pro-compatible disc drive; verify the exact model and listing before purchase.
A digital copy does not require inserting a disc. A PS4 disc also cannot substitute for a digital entitlement if a particular upgrade or game requires a different license. Sony’s backward-compatibility guidance separately states that PS5 does not support PS3 discs; a PS4 digital upgrade that requires the original PS3 disc will therefore not work on PS5.
3. Match the controller to the game
PS5 Pro uses the DualSense controller and supports DualSense Edge. Controller compatibility depends on the game generation:
- PS5 games: use DualSense; PlayStation says DUALSHOCK 4 is not compatible with PS5 games.
- Supported PS4 games: DUALSHOCK 4 and licensed third-party gamepads can work.
- Third-party controllers: check the maker’s compatibility information and the particular game. A controller working with one PS4 title does not establish that it works with PS5 games or every feature.

4. Verify audio, VR and other accessories individually
Sony says PS5 Pro supports audio devices in the same way as PS5. On PS5, headsets connected by USB or the audio jack work, but some headset companion apps may not. For unusual wireless headsets or third-party devices, confirm the connection method and supported features with the manufacturer; basic audio working does not prove that an app or every control feature will work.

Legacy PS VR equipment
PS VR on PS5 requires the PS VR headset, the PS Camera for PS4 and a camera adaptor. The newer HD Camera does not work with PS VR. Some VR games also require PlayStation Move controllers or the VR Aim controller. This is a specific setup for legacy PS VR, not a general indication that every PS4 accessory works with PS5 Pro.
Physical fit and mounting
Do not assume an accessory fits because its packaging says it is for PS5. The PS5 Pro compatibility guide lists the PS5 Pro vertical stand and horizontal feet as compatible, but excludes CFI-1000 PS5 covers, CFI-2000 Slim cover sets and the PS5 console base. Check the exact console model and accessory in Sony’s compatibility table before reusing a cover, stand or base.

Compatibility and transfer are separate questions: a transfer does not make an incompatible game or accessory work. Sony supports several ways to move or restore content on a new PS5. Available data differs depending on whether the source is a PS4 or PS5 and whether transfer happens during initial setup or later.
- Network transfer: move eligible data from a PS4 or PS5 over a network.
- Digital purchases: sign in with the same PlayStation account and redownload purchased games from your library.
- Physical games: insert a supported game disc in a console with a compatible disc drive.
- Storage: connect supported USB extended storage, or use eligible M.2 storage from another PS5.
- Cloud saves: download saves from cloud storage if available for your account and game.
For network transfer, PlayStation recommends using the same account on both consoles, updating system software, synchronizing trophies and connecting both consoles to the same network.
