To check whether a power tool battery and charger are compatible, match the exact battery-platform name and model numbers against the tool and charger manuals or the manufacturer’s compatibility chart. A similar voltage, the same brand, or a battery that appears to fit is not enough to confirm compatibility.
What to check before using a battery or charger
Record the model number from each item: the tool, battery, and charger. Also note the battery-platform name printed on the pack or product label. Use the manufacturer’s documentation for those exact models to confirm both connections: that the battery is approved for the tool and that the charger is approved for the battery.
- Tool: Find the model number on its label or in its manual.
- Battery: Record its model number and platform name.
- Charger: Record its model number and check which battery models it supports.
Search the manufacturer’s official product page, manual, or compatibility chart. DEWALT’s DCS7485 instruction manual, for example, points users to its battery-and-charger compatibility chart.
Why voltage, brand, and physical fit can mislead
Matching voltage is not enough
A voltage marking alone does not establish that a battery is approved for a particular tool or charger. Confirm the platform and exact model combination in manufacturer documentation. DEWALT’s manual directs users to its compatibility chart, while Bosch distinguishes its AMPShare platform from its POWER FOR ALL DIY platform.
#1 Best Overall

After installation, gently pull the battery to verify it is locked. Clean the contacts regularly and use compatible batteries to ensure proper operation.
The same brand can have separate platforms
Brand name by itself does not identify a compatible system. Makita Power Tools (HK) Limited says its genuine lithium-ion batteries are designed for Makita cordless tools and corresponding chargers; consult the product documentation for the exact combination. Bosch likewise states that its AMPShare and POWER FOR ALL DIY platforms are not compatible. See the manufacturers’ statements from Makita and Bosch AMPShare.
A battery that fits may still be the wrong one
Physical fit does not prove that a battery and charger are an approved combination. Do not force a pack into a charger, modify it to fit, or treat an adapter as manufacturer confirmation. DEWALT’s manual says, “DO NOT attempt to charge the battery pack with any chargers other than the ones in this manual,” and warns against modifying a pack to fit a non-compatible charger.

- Product will either come in original packaging that is in less than perfect shape and has been opened to inspect contents or will come in non-retail packaging (brown/white box or white/clear bag). Charges pack up to 40% faster, reducing downtime and maximizing productivity.
- The charger accepts all M18 and M12 batteries, providing an upgrade for both systems.
- The charger indicates when the battery reaches an 80% charge.
- Single unit simplicity for quick charge of all M12 and M18 battery packs.
- Sequential charging: automatically charges the second inserted pack once the first pack is fully charged.
When batteries and chargers can work across brands
Cross-brand compatibility is possible when manufacturers define a shared battery system and explicitly list the products as members or compatible products. It is not a general property of batteries with similar voltage or connector shapes.

- Bosch AMPShare: Bosch describes AMPShare as a multi-brand 18V system and says tools, batteries, and chargers integrated into the alliance are compatible across member brands. Check for the AMPShare label and confirm the specific products on its official platform page. AMPShare compatibility does not extend to Bosch’s separate POWER FOR ALL DIY system.
- Hilti NURON: Hilti states that NURON 22V batteries work across NURON cordless tools. Check Hilti’s NURON batteries and chargers information for product details.
These examples apply to their named systems. They do not establish compatibility with unrelated platforms or every product from a participating brand.

- State of Charge Indicator: Two-stage LED state of charge indicator
- Compatability: DEWALT 12V MAX*, DEWALT 20V MAX*, and FLEXVOLT batteries
- Portability: DCB1104 4A charger is 15% smaller than DCB115 4A Charger.
- Mounting Capability: Two screw wall mount (screws sold separately)
How to verify your exact combination
- Read the battery label. Write down the platform name and battery model number.
- Read the tool label. Note the tool’s exact model number.
- Read the charger label. Note its model number, then find the manual or product page for that charger.
- Check the manufacturer’s documentation. Confirm that the battery is listed for the tool and that the charger is listed for the battery. If the products carry an alliance label, verify both products against the alliance’s own compatibility information.
- Stop if the combination is not confirmed. Contact the manufacturer or use the specified battery and charger. Do not infer compatibility from voltage or fit, and do not force or modify the pack.
Choosing between compatible batteries
Once compatibility is confirmed, compare only specifications the manufacturer provides for the products in question. Capacity, weight, charging time, and the work expected per charge can help determine which supported pack suits the task. Hilti frames battery choice around application, weight, capacity, and work per charge; that guidance does not mean every battery is equally suitable for every tool or job. Check the relevant official product and charger specifications rather than assuming a larger or newer pack is automatically the best choice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when documentation is unclear
A general compatibility guide cannot certify a combination without the three model numbers. If the manufacturer’s chart or manuals do not clearly list your battery, tool, and charger together, ask the manufacturer or choose a combination it specifies. No general compatibility percentage or cross-brand safety statistic is established by the cited manufacturer information; compatibility is determined product by product.
