Before buying, verify gold through the hallmark system used in the country where you are shopping, and verify a diamond through precise written disclosures and any grading report’s issuing laboratory. A stamp or a stone’s appearance alone cannot prove what the item is. In India, check the gold item’s HUID using the BIS Care app; for a GIA report, compare its details with GIA’s Report Check database.
Start by defining what “genuine” means
“Genuine” can refer to several different claims: the gold’s fineness, whether a diamond is natural or laboratory-created, whether a stone has been treated, or whether a grading report belongs to the stone being sold. Ask the seller to state each material claim precisely and include it in the sales paperwork. A genuine report does not establish every claim about a piece of jewellery or the metal holding the stone.
- For gold: confirm the stated caratage or fineness and the applicable national hallmark.
- For a diamond: establish whether it is natural, laboratory-created, or an imitation such as moissanite, and ask about treatments or enhancements.
- For documentation: distinguish a grading report from an appraisal; they are not interchangeable.
How to check gold jewellery
1. Identify the local hallmark system
Hallmarks are jurisdiction-specific; a familiar-looking stamp is not a universal proof system. Caratage (also written karatage) and fineness expressed in parts per thousand are both used. The World Gold Council’s overview of gold hallmarks describes differences between UK and U.S. practices. Check the official authority for the country of purchase for current marking rules, exemptions, and verification options.

Under India’s current HUID-based hallmark system, the hallmark contains the BIS logo, the purity mark in caratage and fineness, and a unique six-digit alphanumeric HUID. Inspect all three elements, then use the BIS Care app’s “Verify HUID” feature and compare the lookup information with the item. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) describes hallmarks as official marks used in India as a guarantee of precious-metal purity or fineness. See the BIS General Hallmarking FAQ and its consumer protection guidance.

Ask the jeweller to show the marks with a magnifier. BIS says registered jewellers in India should make a 10X magnifying glass available for customers to view hallmark details. Magnification helps you read a mark; it does not assay the metal or independently prove purity.
3. Inspect every component and keep an itemized bill
For paired or multi-part jewellery in India, check each piece and detachable part separately. BIS guidance says each item in a pair and detachable components should carry hallmarking and fineness details, with distinct HUIDs. Do not assume an earring’s, pendant’s, or set’s single visible mark covers every component.

Keep an authentic bill that identifies the article. BIS says article details on the bill are necessary for dispute or complaint handling. Compare the description on the bill with the piece you are taking home.
4. Arrange testing if the question remains important
If a material uncertainty remains, ask about independent testing rather than treating a stamp or visual inspection as an assay. In India, consumers can take jewellery or a sample to a BIS-recognized Assaying & Hallmarking Centre for chargeable testing. This route is India-specific; elsewhere, use the relevant official authority or an appropriately qualified independent service. Testing should answer the question you actually have, such as metal fineness, not be assumed to verify every feature of a finished item.

How to check diamond jewellery
1. Get a precise, written description
Ask whether the stone is natural, laboratory-created, or imitation, and whether it has treatments or enhancements. “Real” is too vague to distinguish these categories. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says natural and lab-created gems can be hard to distinguish and that lab-created and imitation gems should be clearly labeled. Ask for the relevant details in the sales paperwork; the FTC advises considering another seller if the seller will not put those details in writing. See its Buying Gemstones, Diamonds, and Pearls guidance.
2. Authenticate any grading report with its issuer
If the seller supplies a GIA report, use GIA Report Check to compare the report’s information with GIA’s database. GIA also describes security features including a hologram, security screen, and microprint. A database match supports the authenticity of the report record; it does not verify every sales claim or establish the metal composition of the setting.

Ask what the report covers and compare its identifying details with the stone being sold. A grading report is not the same as an appraisal, and neither should be treated as proof of claims it does not address.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Compare the attributes that affect the purchase
Compare the disclosed identity and origin, treatments, carat weight, dimensions, color, cut, and clarity. The FTC notes that treatments can affect a gem’s value or care. Make sure the written description and report are consistent with the stone and the seller’s claims.
4. Do not rely on visual tricks
A diamond’s appearance cannot reliably tell you whether it is natural, laboratory-created, or an imitation. For a set stone or a question a report does not resolve, ask what equipment and expertise the seller uses, or seek an independent gem-identification service. A loupe can help inspect details, but it cannot establish diamond origin or identity on its own.

| Evidence or method | What it helps verify | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Official hallmark lookup, such as India’s BIS Care “Verify HUID” | Whether the identifier and associated hallmark information match the official service | Confirm that the lookup corresponds to the exact item and every relevant component; rules and services differ by jurisdiction. |
| Magnifier or loupe | Whether a small mark or report feature can be read | Reading a mark is not an assay; visual inspection does not establish a diamond’s origin. |
| Written invoice and disclosure | What the seller represented about the article, stone, and treatments | It records the seller’s claims; it is not independent testing. |
| Laboratory report and issuer check | Whether a report record matches the issuing laboratory’s database and the attributes described in that report | A report does not authenticate every sales claim or establish the setting’s metal composition; a grading report is not an appraisal. |
| Independent assay or gem identification | The specific metal or stone question addressed by the service | Confirm the service’s qualifications, method, cost, and the scope of the result. |
Before paying: a short checklist
- Ask which country’s marking rules apply and what the stated gold purity means.
- For Indian gold, check the BIS logo, purity/fineness mark, and six-digit alphanumeric HUID in BIS Care.
- Inspect every item in a pair and any detachable component; make sure the bill identifies the jewellery.
- For a diamond, get its natural, laboratory-created, or imitation status and any treatment disclosure in writing.
- If a report is supplied, check it with the issuing laboratory and compare its identifying information with the stone.
- If the evidence does not answer a high-stakes question, pause the purchase and seek suitable independent testing.
This is general consumer guidance, not a global legal checklist. The operational detail here is strongest for India’s BIS gold hallmark system and U.S. FTC diamond consumer advice; confirm current local requirements with the relevant authority. For additional U.S. disclosure context, see the FTC’s Jewelry Guides.
