For a U.S. federal agency, start with Anthropic’s Trust Center to review Claude for Government’s authorization information, then contact Anthropic Public Sector at pubsec@anthropic.com to confirm eligibility, onboarding, and current terms. Anthropic says federal agencies can purchase through the GSA Schedule. If your organization is state, local, territorial, tribal, or outside the United States, ask Anthropic directly; its published information does not establish a universal eligibility rule for those agencies.

What Claude for Government is—and who it is for

Anthropic describes Claude for Government (C4G) as a FedRAMP High authorized software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering designed for U.S. federal agencies and regulated environments. The company says it is intended for customers whose requirements align with FedRAMP High or NIST 800-53 High, and that it provides core capabilities similar to Claude for Enterprise with additional security measures. See Anthropic’s Trust Center for its current product and authorization information.

Anthropic’s August 12, 2025 announcement said access had expanded across all three branches of the U.S. government, including federal civilian executive agencies and legislative and judicial branches. It directs leadership at eligible organizations to contact its Public Sector team. That announcement does not settle eligibility for every state, local, territorial, tribal, or international government, so agencies in those categories should seek a direct determination.

How to check availability for your agency

  1. Define the agency and the workload. Record your jurisdiction, the type and sensitivity of the data, and the required security baseline. Those details matter because C4G and cloud-provider routes to Claude have different service and authorization boundaries.
  2. Review C4G’s authorization information. Anthropic’s Trust Center says the C4G FedRAMP High authorization package is accessible through the Palantir Federal Cloud Service (PFCS) authorization record in the FedRAMP Marketplace. The Trust Center FAQ instructs readers to search for “Palantir,” open “Palantir Federal Cloud Service (PFCS) – FedRAMP Cloud,” and review the services section for Claude for Government. This explains where the record is listed; it does not mean every agency must procure C4G directly through Palantir.
  3. Ask Anthropic Public Sector to confirm your case. Anthropic’s August 12, 2025 access announcement and its GSA Schedule announcement direct interested eligible organizations to pubsec@anthropic.com. Provide your agency, intended workload, required baseline, and preferred deployment route. Ask the team to confirm eligibility, the service boundary, onboarding requirements, and current terms.
  4. Verify the procurement route and current contract details. On August 5, 2025, Anthropic announced that U.S. federal departments and agencies could purchase Claude through the GSA Schedule, with pre-negotiated pricing and terms intended to comply with federal acquisition regulations. The announcement does not provide a complete current price list. Confirm current schedule details and contracting steps through official acquisition channels.
  5. Check alternatives if you need model access on a cloud platform rather than C4G SaaS. Anthropic has described Claude access through Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud and Google Cloud Vertex AI within Assured Workloads. Before making a decision, confirm the currently supported models, service, geography, workload level, and your agency’s eligibility.

How C4G differs from cloud-hosted Claude

FedRAMP and similar frameworks apply to cloud services—such as IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS—not to an AI model in isolation. Anthropic lists C4G as its SaaS offering and describes Bedrock and Vertex AI as partner-hosted environments. When documenting a security or procurement decision, name the actual service and its authorization boundary. Avoid saying simply that “Claude is FedRAMP approved,” because that wording can obscure which service and environment are covered.

Route What Anthropic has described What to confirm
Claude for Government Anthropic describes C4G as a FedRAMP High authorized SaaS offering for federal agencies and regulated environments with requirements aligned to FedRAMP High or NIST 800-53 High. The Trust Center says its authorization package is accessible through the PFCS authorization record in the FedRAMP Marketplace. Agency eligibility, service boundary, onboarding, current authorization details, and terms with Anthropic Public Sector.
Claude through Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud Anthropic’s June 11, 2025 announcement described access for FedRAMP High and DoD Impact Level 4 and 5 workloads, and identified federal agency employees, defense contractors, and approved partners as users. Current model availability, workload support, customer eligibility, and the applicable AWS service boundary. The announcement is dated and may not reflect current coverage.
Claude through Vertex AI in Google Cloud Assured Workloads Anthropic’s April 2, 2025 announcement described FedRAMP High and DoD IL2 access. Its setup sequence was to configure an Assured Workloads environment, access Claude in Vertex AI Model Garden, and use Vertex AI API endpoints. Current model coverage, workload support, customer eligibility, and the applicable Google Cloud service boundary. The announcement is dated and may not reflect current coverage.

These routes are not interchangeable merely because they provide access to Claude models. Compare them against your agency’s jurisdiction and eligibility, required security baseline, data sensitivity, hosting model, procurement channel, and the models and workloads currently supported.

What agencies outside the stated federal scope should do

The reviewed Anthropic pages do not provide a universal eligibility rule for state, local, territorial, tribal, or international agencies. If your organization falls outside the federal scope described for C4G, email pubsec@anthropic.com with your jurisdiction, security requirements, intended workload, and procurement authority. Ask whether your organization can use C4G or a partner-hosted route, and request confirmation of the applicable authorization boundary and purchasing process before planning deployment.
