Start by asking your carrier to verify your account, local coverage, outages, device status, plan, and SIM or eSIM provisioning. Then check the iPhone’s selected line, reconnect it to the network, and update iOS and carrier settings. These checks can narrow the cause, but “SOS,” “No Service,” or “Searching” alone cannot prove that the phone is faulty.

What the iPhone status tells you—and what it does not

Apple Support says, “If you see "No Service" or "Searching" in the status bar of your device, your device isn’t connected to a cellular network.” SOS is another status you may see when cellular service is unavailable. These messages describe the connection state, not its cause: an account or network issue, coverage, SIM or eSIM setup, iPhone settings, or a device fault could be involved.

Before changing anything, note what fails—calls, texts, mobile data, or all three—and where it happens. A problem limited to one location is useful context for the carrier’s coverage and outage checks; it is not, by itself, a diagnosis.

Work through the checks in this order

1. Try a brief network reconnection and restart

  1. Turn on Airplane Mode and leave it on for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off. Apple Support recommends this to reconnect to the cellular network.
  2. Restart the iPhone and check whether service returns.

If service comes back, that indicates the connection recovered, but does not establish why it failed or whether the underlying issue is resolved.

2. Ask the carrier to check the account and network

Contact your carrier and ask it to verify each of the following:

  • Your account is active and in good standing.
  • Your location has coverage and is not affected by an outage.
  • The device is not blocked or barred from service.
  • Your plan is set up correctly.
  • Your SIM or eSIM is provisioned correctly for the line and device.

The carrier can access account and network information Apple cannot manage. If it identifies an outage, account restriction, plan problem, device block, or provisioning issue, have it resolve that issue and then test cellular service again.

3. Confirm the intended line and inspect the SIM

On a Dual SIM iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular and make sure the intended line is turned on. If the line is missing, contact the carrier to set up an eSIM or insert a physical SIM, as appropriate for your device and plan.

If you use a physical SIM, remove it and reinsert it. If it is damaged, does not fit, or was transferred from another device, ask the carrier whether you need a replacement. A SIM ejector tool can help remove a physical SIM; it has no role in diagnosing an eSIM.

4. Update iOS and check for carrier settings

Install any available iOS update. With Wi-Fi available, open Settings > General > About and install a carrier settings update if prompted. Carrier settings updates can support network connectivity, and a newly inserted SIM may require settings for its new carrier.

5. Run available diagnostics and decide where to escalate

On an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, Apple says the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics that may help identify the source of a cellular issue. If the carrier has ruled out account and network problems and the issue persists after the iPhone-side checks, contact Apple about diagnostics or service. Apple says service may be needed when hardware is suspected; the symptoms alone do not establish a hardware fault.

How to interpret the results

Finding What it suggests Next step
The carrier finds an inactive or restricted account, outage, poor coverage, device block, incorrect plan, or missing SIM/eSIM provisioning. There is a specific carrier-side issue to address. This does not rule out a second, simultaneous problem. Work with the carrier to correct it, then retest.
The carrier confirms the account and local network are working and the correct line is provisioned, but the issue continues after iPhone checks. It is more appropriate to investigate the device. This is an escalation point, not proof of a hardware failure. Use Apple’s available diagnostics or seek Apple service.
The status bar shows SOS, No Service, or Searching, with no other checks completed. The phone is not connected to cellular service, but the status does not distinguish carrier, SIM/eSIM, settings, or hardware causes. Continue through both carrier-side and iPhone-side checks.
