To check whether an app will support the iPadOS features you need, verify three things separately: the app’s minimum iPadOS version in its App Store listing, whether the exact iPad model can run the latest iPadOS, and whether the app developer supports the specific feature on that device. The first two checks establish basic compatibility; they do not prove that an app implements a new capability.
Check the app’s iPadOS requirement
- Identify the exact app and version you need. Make a list of essential apps and the features you expect to use in each. “Latest iPadOS features” is too broad to verify without naming a capability, such as a multitasking option, an Apple Pencil function, or a system integration.
- Open the app’s App Store product page. Scroll to Compatibility and note the minimum iPadOS version. Apple’s App Store listings show this requirement; an example listing is available in Apple’s App Store Connect page.
- Compare that minimum with the iPad you are considering. The iPad must be able to run at least the required version for the app download. Apple explains this requirement in its iPad (A16) technical specifications.
The App Store minimum tells you the OS floor for running or downloading that app version. It is not a list of every iPadOS feature the developer has implemented. Apple notes that an app build’s minimum OS is calculated from its build settings in its App Store Connect build and metadata documentation.
Verify that the exact iPad supports the latest iPadOS
Apple’s current compatibility pages identify iPadOS 27 as the latest major release. The iPadOS 27 download guide lists these eligible model families:

- iPad Pro: 4th generation and later, with M1 and later.
- iPad Air: 4th generation and later, with M2 and later.
- iPad: 9th generation and later, and A16.
- iPad mini: 6th generation and A17 Pro.
Those family names are not enough to verify a particular used or seller-listed iPad. Match the exact model and generation against Apple’s detailed iPad models compatible with iPadOS 27 list. Apple says the iPad will only be offered updates compatible with it; a model missing from the current list should not be assumed to receive that release.

Check software on an iPad you can inspect
On a used or already-set-up iPad, open Settings > General > About to see the installed iPadOS version. To check for an available compatible update, open Settings > General > Software Update, as described in Apple’s iPadOS 27 download guide.
Confirm the specific feature with the app developer
Once the app and iPad pass the OS checks, look for the named capability in the app developer’s documentation or support information. Confirm its software and device requirements, and ask the developer if those details are not published. Neither an app’s minimum OS version nor the iPad’s eligibility for iPadOS 27 establishes that a particular app supports a particular new feature.

- Exact model name and generation, checked against Apple’s current compatibility list.
- Minimum iPadOS version for every required app.
- Device and software requirements for each must-have app feature.
- Any regional, language, or carrier conditions relevant to that feature.
If multiple iPads meet those requirements, then compare purchase factors such as price, display size, storage, and accessory compatibility. Current compatibility does not establish how many future years of iPadOS updates a model will receive.
