Short answer: inventory every font a site actually loads, identify the foundry or service and exact files, then match that implementation to the font’s web license. A desktop installation or a visual match does not prove that serving the font from a website is permitted. Record the license and deployment evidence; if the terms are unclear, ask the rights holder or a qualified lawyer.
What “font compliance” means
Font compliance is a rights question, not a design or browser question. You need to establish that the specific family or files may be delivered to visitors, through the method your site uses, for the project and account involved. The answer depends on the font’s own license or service terms, your delivery method, and any continuing conditions such as an active subscription.
This is a practical screening process, not a universal legal test. Licenses differ by foundry, country, project and edition. A scanner can show what a browser downloaded; it cannot prove that a contract grants those rights.
1. Inventory what the site really loads
Start with the production site, not a design file or a list of fonts in a CMS. Use your browser’s developer tools on representative pages.

- Open the page and choose Developer tools → Network. Filter by
fontor inspect requests ending in.woff2,.woff,.otfor.ttf. - Record each request URL, response status, file type and whether it comes from your domain, a font provider, a CDN or another host.
- In the Computed styles panel, note the rendered family and weight for headings, body text, icons and variable-font instances. A CSS declaration can name a family that falls back to another font, so verify the network request.
- Search the site’s CSS and build output for
@font-face, provider stylesheet links, preload tags and JavaScript that injects font CSS. Include fonts loaded only after interaction or on less common templates. - Capture the exact family name, style, weight range, file URL, source account or project, domains covered and whether the files are self-hosted.
This inventory is an audit record. It does not itself establish permission.
2. Find the terms for the exact font
Identify the foundry or service from the file metadata, provider dashboard, purchase record or stylesheet. Then obtain the license for that precise family and version. Do not infer web rights from a desktop installation, a design-tool menu or a generic “commercial use” label.
Desktop and web rights are different
Fort Foundry’s desktop license is an explicit example: it excludes website use and directs customers to a separate web license. Therefore, a font installed on a designer’s computer may still require an additional web right before it is served to visitors.
Hosted services and self-hosting
Check whether the license permits the provider to host the files for you or permits you to put them on your own server. Adobe’s guidance treats these as different arrangements: its web service uses account-provided embed code, while local hosting requires a license from the foundry or an authorized reseller.

3. Compare deployment with the license
Use a written comparison rather than a yes/no assumption. For every font, answer these questions:

Adobe’s FAQ says web and desktop use are available while a Creative Cloud subscription is active and advises that a client website load Adobe Fonts through the client’s own subscription for uninterrupted licensing or hosting. Confirm the actual account and service terms for your project rather than relying on a general description.
Adobe Fonts: the implementation rule
For Adobe Fonts website display, Adobe states: “To display fonts on your website, you must use the embed code provided in your account to ensure proper licensing.” Copy the project’s current embed code from the account and keep it in the deployed template. Do not replace it with downloaded files unless you separately purchase a self-hosting license from the foundry or an authorized reseller.
Review client ownership carefully. If an agency builds the site, document which client account supplies the embed and what happens if the subscription ends. A staging domain, production domain and campaign microsite may need separate treatment under the account terms.

4. Preserve an evidence trail
For each family, create a small compliance record containing:
- family, styles, weights and file names or URLs observed;
- foundry, provider, account or reseller;
- the license or service terms and purchase or subscription receipt;
- site, client, domain and delivery method;
- date of inspection, screenshots or exported network evidence, and the CSS or embed snippet;
- any conditions such as active subscription, traffic limits or domain restrictions;
- the person who approved the match and the date for the next review.
No universal retention period is established for these records. Keep them for the life of the project and according to your organization’s normal legal and procurement policy.
5. Use a repeatable audit workflow
- Choose coverage: production pages, authenticated areas where permitted, responsive breakpoints and templates that lazy-load fonts.
- Collect requests: export the network log and save CSS, provider URLs and file metadata.
- Map identities: connect every request to a family, foundry and account; flag unknown files.
- Read the grant: locate web embedding, hosting, project and subscription clauses for that exact family.
- Compare: mark each item compliant, undocumented or apparently outside the terms. “Unknown” is not permission.
- Remediate: switch to the licensed embed, buy the required web right, remove the font, or obtain written clarification.
- Recheck releases: repeat after redesigns, provider migrations, account changes and subscription lapses.

The CSS names a font but no file request appears
The browser may be using a system fallback, a cached file or a variable font loaded under a different URL. Disable cache, reload, inspect computed styles and search all stylesheets.

The file is on your CDN, but the purchase was for desktop use
Pause deployment and locate the foundry’s web license. The Fort Foundry example shows why desktop rights cannot be presumed to include website use.
An Adobe web font was downloaded and self-hosted
Restore the account embed code or obtain a separate self-hosting license from the foundry or authorized reseller. Keep the written grant with the project record.
A client supplied the font but cannot find the account
Ask for the invoice, family name, account owner and domain coverage. Do not assume an agency’s or designer’s subscription covers the client site.
The provider’s terms are ambiguous
Send the exact family, deployment URL, hosting method and account details to the foundry or authorized reseller and request a written answer. For a dispute or material risk, consult qualified legal counsel.

What an audit can and cannot conclude
An audit can establish what the browser loads, which source appears to provide it and whether your documents match the stated deployment. It cannot determine contractual ownership from a screenshot, identify every hidden agreement, or predict a remedy in a particular jurisdiction. Treat an automated inventory as a compliance aid, not legal advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any font marked “free” on a website?
No. Verify the exact license and whether it permits web embedding, the chosen hosting method and your project. “Free” is not a substitute for reading the terms.
Does converting a desktop font to WOFF2 create web rights?
No. File conversion changes format, not the contractual grant. Obtain web permission from the rights holder.
Who should license a font used on a client website?
Follow the applicable terms and document the responsible account or purchaser. Adobe’s guidance says client websites should load Adobe Fonts through the client’s own Creative Cloud subscription.
