What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A website is not necessarily down because one page failed to load. Check the URL, reproduce the request, compare another network or device, and inspect DNS and HTTP results in that order. This sequence distinguishes a mistyped path, browser or resolver problem, and a genuine server-side outage.
Start with the URL and the exact symptom
Copy the complete address into a text editor and verify the scheme (http or https), hostname, spelling, and path. A missing character in a hostname can produce a DNS error; a valid hostname with a wrong path can return a normal-looking 404 page. Neither proves that the whole site is unavailable.
- Try the homepage and the specific page separately.
- Remove accidental spaces, punctuation, or copied tracking text from the address.
- Note whether the browser shows a DNS error, connection timeout, certificate warning, blank page, or an HTTP error page.
Record the URL and the time, including your time zone. Those details are useful if you later contact the site owner or hosting provider.
Reload, then inspect the request in your browser
Use a normal reload first
Reload once, then try a private window. A private window avoids many cached files, cookies, and extensions, but it still uses the same device, network, and DNS path. If the page loads privately, disable extensions and clear the site’s stored data before treating the issue as an outage.

Use Developer Tools for a precise result
- Open the page, then open Developer Tools (usually F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux, Cmd+Option+I on macOS).
- Select Network and enable Preserve log if navigation immediately clears the list.
- Reload the page and select the document request, normally the row whose type is Document.
- Read its status, response headers, remote address, and timing. Sort by status to find failed scripts, stylesheets, images, or API calls.
A document can return 200 while a critical API request fails, so inspect the requests that the page needs, not only the first row. A certificate error, blocked request, or timeout may identify a local or intermediary problem even when the origin server is healthy.
Test an independent access path
Open the same URL on a phone using cellular data, or on another network or device. If it works there, the first path is the leading suspect: browser state, local firewall, Wi-Fi, VPN, proxy, or DNS resolver. If it fails everywhere, the evidence for a site-side problem is stronger, but it is still not proof that every location is affected; outages can be regional or limited to one CDN edge, account, or URL.
| Observation | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Works on another network or device | Failure may be local to the first browser, network, or resolver. | Compare DNS, disable VPN or proxy, and test again. |
| Fails on several independent paths | A shared server, CDN, DNS, or application problem is more likely. | Inspect the HTTP result and any relevant provider status page. |
| Only one asset or API call fails | The page itself may be available while a dependency is not. | Capture that request’s URL, status, and timing. |
Understand HTTP status codes
HTTP codes are grouped into five classes: 1xx informational, 2xx success, 3xx redirect, 4xx client error, and 5xx server error. The code describes the request that answered you; it does not automatically describe every page or visitor.
404 and other 4xx responses
A 404 Not Found means the requested resource was not found at that URL. Check the hostname and path, follow links from the site’s homepage, and look for a moved page. Other 4xx codes can indicate authentication, authorization, rate limiting, or a request rejected by a security layer. These are generally not evidence of a site-wide outage.
5xx responses
A 5xx response indicates a server-side class of failure from the origin or an intermediary. 503 Service Unavailable is commonly used during maintenance or overload. A 500, 502, 504, or similar code can instead point to an application crash, an unavailable upstream, or a gateway timeout. Save the exact code and response body; an intermediary’s branded error page can identify which layer answered.

Redirects and successful responses
A 3xx response may be normal when a site redirects HTTP to HTTPS or sends an old path to a new one. A 2xx response means that particular request completed successfully, not that every script, image, or backend function works.
Use curl to see what a clean request receives
Run this from a terminal, replacing the example host with the URL you are investigating:
curl -svo /dev/null https://www.example.com/
The verbose output shows DNS connection attempts, TLS negotiation, redirects, request headers, response headers, and the final status. The -o /dev/null option discards the body; remove it if you need to save the response. Add -L to follow redirects:
curl -Lsvo /dev/null https://www.example.com/
curl tests one machine and one network path. It is diagnostic evidence, not a multi-location uptime test. Compare the status, server or CDN headers, and timing with a browser request. A curl timeout without an HTTP status means the request did not receive a normal HTTP response.
Separate DNS failure from web-server failure
DNS resolves a hostname to an address before an ordinary HTTP request can reach the intended server. If the browser reports that the address cannot be found, first verify spelling and whether you intended the apex domain (for example, example.com) or a subdomain (such as www.example.com).

Query the configured resolver
nslookup example.com
On systems with the dig utility, request the address records directly:
dig example.com A
dig example.com AAAA
An empty or error result can mean a missing record, an expired or misconfigured DNS zone, or a problem with your recursive resolver. Test from another network or query a resolver you administer before changing settings. A successful DNS answer only proves that a name resolved; the web service can still be down afterward.

Look for the target site’s own status page or the status page of a provider that the site visibly uses. A provider dashboard has a defined scope. For example, Google’s Search Status Dashboard reports systems powering Google Search and broad impacts; a green dashboard there cannot certify that an unrelated website works. Continue the direct URL, DNS, and HTTP checks even when a dashboard is clear.
What to send the site owner
If you are a visitor, report the exact URL, status or browser error, occurrence time with time zone, your approximate region, and whether another network worked. A screenshot can help, but text details are easier to search.
If you own the site, correlate the report with access logs, application logs, deployment history, CDN or proxy events, and origin health. Compare a normal request with a direct-origin request only when your architecture permits it; bypassing a CDN or access policy can produce a result that ordinary visitors cannot reproduce. For a 5xx incident, your hosting provider may need the code, URL, and time to locate the failing layer.

Troubleshooting by symptom
“This site can’t be reached” or a DNS error
- Check the hostname character by character.
- Run
nslookupordigand compare another resolver or network. - Temporarily disconnect a VPN, proxy, or filtering service.
- If only one resolver fails, report the resolver or network issue rather than declaring the site down.
Connection timeout or reset
- Try cellular data and a second device.
- Compare IPv4 and IPv6 behavior if your network supports both.
- Check whether a firewall, corporate proxy, or security product is blocking the destination.
- Use curl verbose output to see whether failure occurs during DNS, TCP, TLS, or after the request is sent.
Certificate warning
Do not bypass a certificate warning merely to test the page. Confirm the hostname, system clock, and network interception settings. A certificate problem can be limited to one domain or one interception path while the site remains reachable for other users.
Blank page or partially loaded page
Inspect the Network and Console panels. A 200 document with failed JavaScript, API, font, or image requests is a dependency failure, not necessarily a down website. Disable extensions and test a private window, then capture the failing request details.
503, 502, 504, or another 5xx
Repeat once to rule out a transient response, then record the code, URL, time zone, and any request identifier. Test another network. Visitors should send those details to the owner; owners should check the host, origin, proxy, and recent changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Automate a repeatable check
For a quick scripted check, this Python example records the final status and elapsed time. It does not prove global availability and should not be run at a high rate against a site you do not control.
import time
import requests
url = "https://www.example.com/"
started = time.perf_counter()
try:
response = requests.get(url, timeout=20, allow_redirects=True)
elapsed = time.perf_counter() - started
print({
"status": response.status_code,
"final_url": response.url,
"seconds": round(elapsed, 3),
})
except requests.RequestException as error:
print({"error": str(error)})
For recurring checks on a site you own, store results by time and location, alert on several consecutive failures, and retain response headers. A single alert should trigger verification, not an automatic public outage announcement.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can capture a page as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF while giving you a visual record of what a rendering path returned. The API can accept the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
Use the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication and options. The following call captures Stripe as a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Equivalent Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Equivalent Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every plan includes its capture features; the free plan provides 1,000 screenshots per month without a card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. You can sign up free to try it.
Limits of a one-time check
These tests answer whether a particular URL was reachable from a particular path at a particular time. They cannot establish worldwide availability, historical uptime, or whether authenticated users and background APIs work. Regional CDN failures, intermittent overload, and DNS propagation can require repeated checks from independent networks or a monitoring service. Treat the evidence proportionally: report what failed, where, and when rather than claiming that the entire internet can or cannot reach the site.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 404 mean the whole website is down?
No. A 404 normally means the specific hostname-and-path combination has no resource. Verify the address and test the homepage or another known page.
How many checks are enough to call an outage?
There is no universal number. Confirm the result on an independent network, inspect the HTTP or DNS evidence, and note the time and scope before reporting an outage.
Should I change my DNS server when a site will not load?
Only after comparing lookups and confirming that the problem is limited to your resolver. Changing DNS does not repair a failed origin server or an incorrect authoritative record.
