To check a viral celebrity clip, trace it to the earliest credible upload, verify the event and caption independently, and inspect the original file for provenance or supported AI signals. No single visual clue, platform label, or detector result settles the question: a clip can be genuine but misleadingly captioned, and a negative check does not prove it is authentic.
Check the claim before checking the pixels
Write down exactly what the post claims: who supposedly said or did what, where, and when. Then assess two separate questions: whether the clip was generated or altered, and whether the event happened as the caption describes. Genuine footage can be paired with a false caption or stripped of its original context.
Follow this verification workflow
- Pause before sharing. Save the post’s specific claim and note the account that published it.
- Trace the upload. Look for the celebrity’s own account, a representative, a credible news organization, or another uploader with a verifiable connection to the event. Search distinctive wording from the caption and look for the earliest version or a longer clip. An earlier upload is a useful lead, not proof by itself.
- Corroborate the event. Search for independent reporting and primary statements about the alleged appearance, interview, or incident. If credible sources do not confirm it, keep the event unverified rather than treating a detector result as confirmation.
- Use the best available file. Prefer the original download or earliest upload over a screenshot, crop, screen recording, or repeatedly compressed repost. These transformations can strip metadata or weaken signals.
- Check for supported provenance or watermarks. Use a checker compatible with the file type and signal you want to inspect. Record which service checked which file; do not assume one service checks every AI system.
- Interpret the result narrowly. A detected signal supports the presence of that particular signal. “Not detected” means only that the checker did not find a signal it supports. Neither result identifies a creator, prompt, or account.
- Describe uncertainty accurately. If the evidence conflicts or remains incomplete, call the clip unverified or the checks inconclusive. On TikTok, suspected policy-violating media can be reported through its misinformation/deepfake reporting flow.
What provenance and AI checks can establish
Content Credentials record history, not truth
C2PA Content Credentials can record information about a file’s origin and editing history when present. Their presence does not establish whether the depicted event is true or shown in context. C2PA’s explainer says, “Provenance information alone cannot tell you whether the digital content is true, accurate or factual.” Credentials are optional, so their absence does not prove that a clip is false or AI-made. OpenAI says its provenance checks look for supported OpenAI-associated signals, including C2PA and SynthID. Metadata removal, transformations, unsupported products, or other providers can leave generated content undetected. A negative result is therefore not a clean bill of health. OpenAI’s content provenance documentation explains these limits.

Google’s Gemini help page describes checks for supported image, video, and audio signals, including Google-specific SynthID and compatible Content Credentials. A SynthID check is specific to Google AI output; credentials may provide origin and history information but do not, by themselves, prove a file is AI-generated. Availability depends on product, account, platform, and compatible credential support. Consult Google’s current Gemini help page for available access and instructions.

Choose a check by signal type, media format, whether you have the original file, and what a negative result means. The cited sources do not establish a reliable cross-provider accuracy ranking, so they do not support calling one of these services the most accurate.

Use visual clues and search tools as leads, not verdicts
Unnatural-looking details may prompt closer scrutiny, but appearance alone cannot authenticate or disprove a clip. Google recommends reverse image search and metadata analysis as aids. Those methods can help locate earlier versions or context; they do not replace independent corroboration. Metadata analysis is most useful when you have the original file, because reposting and editing can remove information.
Gemini’s help page gives sample questions such as “Was this image/video/audio created or edited by Google AI?”, “Is this AI-generated?”, and “Is this a real video?” Treat them as ways to ask about supported signals, not as promises that a tool can settle every case. What to say when evidence is incomplete
Separate what you know from what you do not. For example: “I found no supported AI signal in this repost, but that does not establish that it is authentic. I have not confirmed the event from an independent source.” If you find a supported signal, describe the signal and checker rather than attributing the clip to a particular person or prompt.
