To check whether Windows 11 recorded a USB drive installation, open %SystemRoot%infSetupAPI.dev.log and search for the device’s USB hardware identifier. The log can show installation activity, but it is not a complete connection timeline and cannot identify who used a drive or what files they opened.
Where to find the USB history log
Windows keeps device installation information in SetupAPI.dev.log, normally in the Windows INF directory. The usual full path is C:WindowsINFSetupAPI.dev.log. Microsoft documents this plain-text log as a way to verify device installation and troubleshoot installation problems: SetupAPI Device Installation Log Entries.
How to search for a USB drive

Open
SetupAPI.dev.login a text editor. If Windows denies access, use an editor launched with appropriate administrator rights. Read the file; do not edit it.#1 Best Overall

Use the editor’s Find command to search for
USBVID_. If you know the vendor and product identifiers, search for those values to narrow the results. -
Review the surrounding lines and the relevant installation section. Do not treat a lone text match as proof of a particular person’s activity.

If you can inspect the device or its packaging, compare its identifiers with the log entry. Microsoft explains that standard USB identifiers are derived from device descriptors: Standard USB Identifiers.

What a matching entry can—and cannot—tell you
A relevant section in SetupAPI.dev.log is evidence that Windows handled installation of a device. A VID identifies a vendor and a PID identifies a product; these values may point to a product family, not one uniquely identifiable physical drive.

The log alone does not establish who connected the drive, what files were accessed, or every time it was inserted or removed. An entry may also be absent, truncated, or insufficient to reconstruct earlier activity. Microsoft’s documentation does not specify a universal retention period or guarantee that every connection and removal appears in this log.

Microsoft’s USB Device Registry Entries article describes information available after enumeration. Treat registry inspection as a technical follow-up, not a routine step, and do not modify device keys just to look for history.

USB Event Tracing for Windows describes ETW as a diagnostic method for capturing USB activity. It is meant for debugging and requires knowledge of the USB stack to interpret; it is not necessary for an ordinary check of installation evidence.
When the question is about device policy
If a removable device was blocked or failed to install under an organization’s policy, SetupAPI.dev.log can also help troubleshoot that issue. Microsoft’s removable-device Group Policy troubleshooting guidance includes Windows 11 and points to the log in relevant cases. Policy troubleshooting is different from proving every past connection.
