Use float(text) when the string should become a Python floating-point value, and catch ValueError if it cannot be parsed. If “number” means a finite value, also check math.isfinite(): Python accepts spellings such as nan and inf. For decimal-oriented values, parse the original string with Decimal(text) and check is_finite() when NaN and infinity are not allowed.
How do I check if a string is a number in Python?
For ordinary floating-point input, attempt conversion rather than checking characters one by one. A successful conversion tells you Python can parse the text as a float; it does not necessarily mean the result is finite or conforms to a narrower format your application requires.

return Falsefloat() converts text to a Python floating-point value. The exception handler makes malformed input return False; math.isfinite() rejects parsed NaN and infinity values. Python documents the constructor and its supported special-value spellings in the built-in types documentation.
If your application considers NaN and infinity acceptable, omit math.isfinite() and return True after conversion succeeds. Keep the original text if you need it later: parsing to float changes the representation into a binary floating-point value.

How do I validate a decimal number in Python?
Use Decimal from the standard-library decimal module when decimal representation matters, such as when you need decimal-oriented arithmetic or want to preserve the value expressed by the input string.

With the default context, malformed input raises InvalidOperation; is_finite() returns false for NaN and infinity and true for finite Decimal values. Construct Decimal from the string, not a float
When the source is text, pass that text directly to Decimal. A float has already been represented in binary, so converting it to Decimal preserves that float’s exact value rather than the short decimal text that may have produced it. Python’s documented example converts float('1.1') to Decimal('1.100000000000000088817841970012523233890533447265625'); Decimal('1.1') represents the decimal input value instead.
What syntax counts as a number?
Python’s parsers accept more than a digits-and-decimal-point pattern. Depending on the parser, valid forms can include a leading sign, an exponent, surrounding whitespace, or special values such as NaN and infinity. The Decimal string syntax also supports decimal parts and exponents, and the documentation describes handling of underscores and Unicode decimal digits.

That breadth may not match your product’s input rules. For example, an application may require a decimal point, reject exponent notation, forbid surrounding whitespace, or disallow special values. Parsing answers whether Python accepts the text; apply additional checks or define a separate grammar when the application requires a specific external format.
A pattern such as ^[0-9]+.[0-9]+$ is much narrower: it rejects integers, signed values, and exponent notation even though Python parsers can accept those forms. Use a narrow pattern only when those restrictions are intentional.

Why not use isdecimal(), isdigit(), or isnumeric()?
These string methods classify characters; they do not validate a complete signed decimal number or parse exponent notation. In particular, their definitions cover different sets of Unicode characters:
isdecimal()accepts Unicode decimal characters, including Arabic-Indic digits, but not a sign or decimal point.isdigit()also accepts some digit-like characters, such as superscript two.isnumeric()includes still broader numeric characters, such as the vulgar fraction one fifth.
These predicates can suit a field that is deliberately limited to certain character categories. For general numeric notation, use the parser that matches the value you intend to consume. The distinctions are documented under Python’s built-in string types.

When should I use locale.atof()?
Use locale.atof(text) when the input is written according to a known locale’s decimal and grouping conventions. It parses according to the active LC_NUMERIC setting, unlike the default float() syntax. The Python locale documentation describes locale.atof(); ensure the active locale matches the convention used by the input.
