To check whether a Python string contains a comma, use "," in value. To split a simple comma-delimited string into fields, use value.split(","). These answer different questions, and neither validates CSV syntax; for CSV records with quoted fields, use Python’s csv module.
Check whether a string contains a comma
Use Python’s string membership operator when you only need to know whether the literal comma character appears:
value = "red,green,blue"
has_comma = "," in value
print(has_comma) # TrueThis checks for a comma anywhere in the string. It does not establish that the string has two non-empty fields or conforms to CSV rules.
Split a simple comma-delimited string
For input that uses commas as literal separators and has no quoting rules, call split(","):

print(fields) # ['red', 'green', 'blue']With an explicit separator, consecutive commas delimit empty strings, and splitting an empty string returns a one-item list containing an empty string. The Python 3.14.8 documentation describes this behavior in its built-in types documentation.

Validate fields only against your application’s rules
“Comma-separated” does not by itself define whether empty values, whitespace, or a single field are allowed. If your application specifically requires at least two non-empty fields after trimming surrounding whitespace, encode that rule explicitly:

)This is one possible application-specific check, not a universal definition of comma-separated input. Add any other requirements your data needs, such as whether to preserve whitespace or allow trailing commas.
Use the CSV module when quoted commas matter
A simple split treats every comma as a separator, including a comma inside a quoted field. For CSV records, use csv.reader instead:

Python’s CSV documentation notes that CSV has no single well-defined standard and that applications can produce subtly different formats. See the Python 3.14.8 CSV documentation for reader and dialect details.
When to use csv.Sniffer
csv.Sniffer().sniff(sample) attempts to infer a dialect from a sample, but it can raise csv.Error when no suitable combination is found; the documentation gives a single-column sample as an example. Treat sniffing as an inference aid, not proof that arbitrary input is valid CSV. If the expected dialect is known, specifying it directly is more predictable.

For simple input, Python’s FAQ recommends str.split and points to regular expressions for more complicated parsing. When parsing CSV, validate any additional application-specific requirements after reading the records.
