Before paying for a used or refurbished Samsung Galaxy, verify two separate things: who refurbished it and whether its IMEI is eligible for your intended carrier. A clean case or factory reset proves neither. Ask for the IMEI, check it with the original and intended carriers, and get the refurbishment, warranty, and return terms in writing.
What “refurbished” means—and what it does not prove
“Refurbished,” “renewed,” and “open box” are seller descriptions, not interchangeable proof that Samsung refurbished a phone. Ask the seller who inspected it, what was repaired or replaced, whether the battery was replaced, what testing was performed, who provides the warranty, and how returns work if the description is inaccurate. Request the seller’s name and a written invoice or order record.
Samsung Certified Re-Newed is a specific program described on Samsung’s U.S. Certified Re-Newed page. Samsung says those phones are inspected by Samsung specialists, repaired with genuine Samsung parts, fitted with a certified new battery and assigned a new IMEI. The stated inspection process includes 147 quality checkpoints. The page also advertises a one-year limited manufacturer warranty and says program phones are unlocked and compatible with the buyer’s carrier choice. These statements apply to that U.S. program, not to every phone sold as refurbished or renewed.

For a third-party listing, ask for listing-specific evidence rather than assuming it received Samsung’s inspection or battery replacement. A factory reset and a good-looking exterior do not establish refurbishment history or prove that repairs used Samsung parts.

- Please Note: 1. this version supports Android phone/tablet only; 2. if you don't see "OBDII" on your phone Bluetooth device list, that's OK; go ahead to run App and it will find in App; 3. if you have two or more scanners, go to phone Bluetooth setting and unpair "OBDII" before you use the second one
Get the IMEI and make sure it matches
Ask for the phone’s IMEI before meeting the seller or paying. Samsung’s U.S. support page explains that you can find it by dialing *#06#, checking Settings, looking at original packaging, or consulting carrier account details or a bill of sale: Find the IMEI and check Samsung warranty information.
- Ask the seller to provide the IMEI in advance. If meeting in person, have the seller display it on the handset.
- Compare the handset’s displayed IMEI with the seller’s invoice or other paperwork and the packaging, if available.
- If the numbers differ, pause the purchase and ask Samsung or the carrier to explain the mismatch. Do not treat a box as authoritative when it conflicts with the phone.
- Use official Samsung and carrier checks for the specific device before paying; an IMEI lookup is useful for identification and eligibility checks, but it does not disclose a complete repair or refurbishment history.
Check warranty status and refurbishment documentation
Samsung says warranty status can be checked after signing in to a Samsung Account. If the warranty date shown is incorrect, use “Review Warranty” and upload proof of purchase so Samsung can review it, according to Samsung’s support guidance. An original receipt is therefore more useful than a seller’s unsupported estimate of remaining coverage.

- What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
- Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
- How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
- The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
- Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
A warranty date does not establish whether the phone has been repaired, who performed repairs, or whether replacement parts were genuine. Ask separately for the original purchase documentation and written terms identifying who honors any remaining or refurbished-device warranty.

Ask which carrier originally sold or financed the device, then have that carrier confirm the lock status using the IMEI. Where possible, ask the seller to contact the original carrier while you are present. T-Mobile’s Bring Your Own Device page provides an IMEI checker for T-Mobile network compatibility and help checking whether a phone is locked or unlocked. A result for T-Mobile does not establish eligibility with every other carrier.

If the phone is locked, T-Mobile says the original carrier is the party to contact for unlocking, and financing may need to be paid off first. Its policy applies to T-Mobile devices and account circumstances: the device must have been sold by T-Mobile, not be reported lost, stolen, or blocked, and meet applicable account and plan conditions. For T-Mobile postpaid, the policy includes at least 40 days active on the requesting line and full payment of any financing or lease balance; prepaid requirements differ. See the current T-Mobile Device Unlock Policy.
AT&T’s unlock portal lists requirements including purchase more than 60 days ago, payment in full, no loss, theft, or fraud report, and a current account for current customers. It also offers a request path for people who are not AT&T customers. Carrier policies can change and depend on the phone and account, so use the live portal for the specific device.

Do not rely on “it should unlock.” Ask the seller to complete the unlock and let you verify it before payment, or evaluate the phone as locked. A locked phone is only a sensible choice if you specifically want service from that carrier and accept the consequences; the available policy information does not guarantee every device can be unlocked.

Unlocking removes a carrier software restriction; it does not change the phone’s radio hardware or guarantee every service will work elsewhere. T-Mobile explains that networks use different frequencies and technologies, and an unlocked phone may support some functions but not others on another network. Its BYOD guidance also notes that compatibility depends on supported frequencies and can vary with the phone’s original carrier settings: T-Mobile BYOD guidance and its Consumer Code.

Check the exact IMEI with the carrier you plan to use, then confirm that the specific model supports the services you need, such as voice, mobile data, and eSIM on your plan. Samsung’s compatibility statement for Certified Re-Newed devices is specific to that program; it should not be extended to unrelated used or refurbished listings.
Compare listings using evidence, not labels
When comparing two or more phones, evaluate each listing on the same points:
- Refurbishment provenance: Who inspected or repaired it, and what evidence supports the claim?
- Battery and parts: Is a battery replacement or use of genuine parts documented?
- Warranty: How long does it last, and who is responsible for honoring it?
- Returns: What is the return window, and are there fees or condition requirements?
- Identity: Does the IMEI match the device and seller paperwork?
- Lock and compatibility: Has the relevant carrier checked the IMEI, and does the exact model support your intended service?
- Price: Does the final cost still make sense given the documented condition and any limits?
Samsung Certified Re-Newed offers a clearly described manufacturer process. A third-party refurbished phone may still be a reasonable purchase if its seller documents the condition, warranty, and return terms clearly; do not assume it received Samsung’s 147-point inspection or a new battery without evidence for that individual listing.
When to walk away
If the seller will not provide an IMEI, refuses reasonable checks, cannot explain a mismatch, or offers no clear return route if the phone is misrepresented, you do not have enough evidence to resolve important purchase risks in advance. Choose a listing where the seller and carrier status can be checked before money changes hands.
