To check a political claim or video, separate what the post says from what the image or clip actually shows. Trace the media to its earliest available source, check when and where it appeared, search for earlier versions, and corroborate factual claims with independent reporting or relevant official records. A genuine video can still be old or misleadingly captioned, and no single search result or authenticity signal settles every question.
How can I tell if a political video is real?
First decide which question you are trying to answer. A post may make a factual claim, show genuine footage, and still mislead about the footage’s date, location, or significance. Treat these as separate checks:
- Claim: Is the checkable statement accurate—for example, who said something, when an event happened, or what an election rule requires?
- Media: Does the image or video appear genuine, and can you identify its source?
- Context: Does it show the event, place, and time claimed in the post, or has an older or edited clip been reused?
The House of Commons Library’s guidance on verifying images and videos emphasizes checking the source and timeline. The Government of Canada also recommends checking sources and corroborating claims in its election disinformation guidance.

How to check a political claim or video
- Write down the claim precisely. Separate the caption or narration from what is directly visible or audible. Note details you can test, such as the speaker, place, date, event, quotation, or election procedure.
- Trace the source and timeline. Look for the earliest available post or publication, then identify who supplied the media. Check whether the account or organization is what it claims to be. The House of Commons Library advises checking whether the original source posted the media before the event it supposedly depicts; if it did, the claim cannot be true as stated.
- Search for earlier appearances. For a still image, or a distinctive frame from a video, try reverse image search. The House of Commons Library lists TinEye, Bing, Google, and InVID as examples. Compare older results and their captions: an earlier copy can reveal that a clip is being presented as a different event. The Press Information Bureau’s Factcheck FAQ says its unit uses reverse image search and video analysis to identify viral media recirculated in another context. Search results are leads, not a verdict; no result does not prove the image or video is original.
- Check the full context. Look for the complete clip and compare it with independent reports about the alleged event. Consider whether the media is old, cropped, edited, or attached to a new event. Genuine footage can be misleading when presented as recent or as showing another place or event.
- Corroborate the factual claim. Find credible sources that independently support the central fact rather than repeating the same post. For election dates, qualifications, and voting methods, the FBI advises checking notices from official election offices. Election rules vary by jurisdiction, so use the office responsible for the relevant election. The Government of Canada also recommends checking other sources and fact-checking resources.
- Check provenance if available. C2PA Content Credentials can provide information about digital content’s origin and history. C2PA describes provenance as a complement to media literacy and fact-checking, not a replacement for them. Google says users can check for C2PA Content Credentials in Gemini, but platform features may change. Credentials may be absent; when present, they do not establish that a speaker’s statement is accurate or that a caption is true.
- State what the evidence supports. Use a calibrated description such as “verified,” “misleading context,” “unsubstantiated,” or “not enough evidence.” Keep links or records that let someone retrace your check, and say what remains uncertain rather than forcing a true-or-false conclusion.
For details about provenance, see the C2PA specifications and the C2PA Content Credentials explainer. Google’s description of checking credentials in Gemini appears in its post on supporting democratic processes; availability can change.

What each check can—and cannot—establish
| Check | Useful for | What it does not settle |
|---|---|---|
| Source and timeline | Identifying an earliest available publication and testing whether it could depict the claimed event. | Whether every detail in the post is true or whether the earliest copy has been found. |
| Reverse image search | Finding indexed earlier appearances of a still or video frame and comparing captions. | Originality when there are no results, or the truth of the claim attached to the media. |
| Full clip and independent reporting | Checking whether the clip’s context matches the post and whether other credible sources support the event. | Certainty when the footage or reliable reporting is incomplete. |
| Official election notices | Checking election dates, qualifications, and methods with the relevant election office. | Political claims outside the office’s remit or rules in another jurisdiction. |
| C2PA Content Credentials | Reviewing available information about a file’s origin and history. | Whether the depicted statement is accurate or the post’s caption is truthful. |
How should you treat official fact-checking services?
A government fact-checking unit can be useful within its stated remit, but it is not automatically a universal arbiter of political truth. The Press Information Bureau describes its work as checking facts about Indian government policies, schemes, guidelines, and initiatives. For a claim outside that scope, seek relevant primary records and independent reporting rather than treating the unit’s remit as broader than it is.

Verification is not always a permanent or binary finding. The House of Commons Library notes that answers to verification questions may not settle truth permanently and that knowledge can be revised. If you cannot establish the source, date, context, or claim, say so plainly. Preserve the evidence you found and avoid sharing the post as confirmed; a missing reverse-search result or absent credential is not proof of fabrication.
