If you are helping with India’s Jeevan Pramaan digital life certificate, there is no separate family-facing online tool to look up whether a pensioner is alive. The certificate is generated for the pensioner after their Aadhaar-based biometric authentication. First confirm their status directly or through a trustworthy caregiver; if you cannot, pause and contact the pension disbursing agency. If the pensioner has died, do not generate or submit a life certificate for them.
Can you check a beneficiary’s status online?
Jeevan Pramaan is an Indian service that generates an individual Digital Life Certificate (DLC) after the pensioner provides pension details and completes biometric authentication. Its official process is not a public status search that lets a relative independently check whether someone is alive. The service says a successful authentication generates a DLC stored in its repository: Jeevan Pramaan.

For the beneficiary’s current status, contact them directly or verify through a caregiver you trust. If you still cannot confirm, do not try to resolve the uncertainty by submitting a certificate. Contact the pension disbursing agency and ask what to do while the status is unresolved.
What to do before submitting a Jeevan Pramaan certificate
- Confirm the pensioner’s status. Speak with the person or check with a reliable caregiver. If you cannot establish their status, contact the pension disbursing agency before taking further action.
- Check that the pension authority is onboarded. The Jeevan Pramaan FAQ says the pensioner’s Pension Sanctioning Authority must be onboarded for eligibility. Check the official FAQ or ask the agency if you are unsure.
- Choose an available authentication route. The FAQ lists Citizen Service Centres, pension disbursing offices such as banks, post offices or treasuries, and home generation. Availability may depend on the authority and local service.
- Prepare accurate details and complete the pensioner’s authentication. The process asks for the pensioner’s Aadhaar number, name and mobile number, plus self-declared pension information such as PPO and account details. The pensioner must complete biometric authentication. Incorrect pension details can lead to rejection.
- Check the certificate’s status. A generated DLC is made electronically available to the pension disbursing agency, so the FAQ says it need not be physically submitted again to a bank or post office. The pension authority still decides whether to accept it. The pensioner can download the certificate to check its status; if it is rejected, contact the disbursing agency, correct the information and generate a new certificate if needed.
Which Jeevan Pramaan route may work?
| Route | What it involves | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Phone-camera face authentication | The current app page lists Android 10 or later and iOS 14 or later. The face-authentication app uses the phone camera and does not require a separate biometric device. | Check the current app instructions and requirements before installing or helping someone set it up. |
| Fingerprint or iris authentication | This route uses a compatible biometric device with an RD service. The Windows client also requires an external fingerprint or iris device. | Confirm device certification and RD compatibility, as well as the current instructions for the chosen route. |
| Assisted centre or pension disbursing office | The FAQ lists Citizen Service Centres and offices such as banks, post offices and treasuries as options. | Confirm the location provides DLC generation and what the pensioner needs to bring. |
| IPPB doorstep assistance | India Post Payments Bank says pensioners can contact a post office or request a doorstep visit by a postman or Grameen Dak Sevak for DLC generation. | Check local availability and current service terms with IPPB. |
Pick a route based on the pensioner’s ability to authenticate, access to a compatible phone or biometric device, mobility and locally available assistance. None should be assumed available for every pensioner or authority.

If the pensioner may have died
Do not submit a life certificate for someone whose death is confirmed. Notify the pension disbursing agency and ask how to report the death and whether an eligible family member can claim or continue family pension. The exact process and required documents depend on the scheme and agency.
A Department of Pension & Pensioners’ Welfare circular dated 20 February 2020 describes a route specifically for certain overseas pension cases: a spouse with a joint account with the pensioner informs the pension-disbursing bank and provides a copy of the death certificate, PPO, proof of age or date of birth, and an undertaking. This is an example for that stated context, not a general document list for all pensions. Ask the relevant agency for its instructions: DoPPW circular on death of an overseas pensioner.
Check the due date with the pension authority
Jeevan Pramaan’s FAQ says certificate validity follows the rules of the pension sanctioning authority; there is no single validity period or annual deadline that applies to every beneficiary. Confirm the pensioner’s specific due date and requirements with the authority or disbursing agency. Current rules, app requirements, onboarding and local assistance can change, so check the official service before acting.
