To find out whether a nearby waterway has a harmful algal bloom (HAB) advisory, check the state, Tribal, or local health or environmental agency responsible for that waterbody, using EPA’s HAB resources and advisory links to find the right page. Then check EPA’s How’s My Waterway for reported water-quality conditions and monitoring. For a decision about swimming or other contact today, rely on a current notice for the specific waterbody and affected area—not a nutrient-pollution record, an old sample, a forecast, or appearance alone.
No waterbody or location was specified here, so there is no way to determine whether a particular nearby site currently has an advisory. Local programs and reporting coverage vary.
Find the agency responsible for the exact waterway
- Identify the place precisely. Note the waterbody name, state or county, and the access point or stretch you plan to visit. Also note whether it is freshwater, coastal, or brackish; the responsible agency and relevant resources can differ.
- Start with EPA’s HAB resources. Visit EPA’s harmful algal blooms page and follow its links to state or Tribal information. EPA also provides a state and Tribal HAB resource directory. These can lead to an agency advisory page, map, or reporting channel. State, Tribal, and local governments may issue notices, so an EPA page is a starting point rather than a substitute for the responsible authority’s current notice.
- Search by waterbody and jurisdiction. If the directory does not make the relevant page obvious, search the waterbody name with the state or county and terms such as “algae advisory” or “health department.” Confirm that the result comes from the government agency responsible for the site.
- Read the notice, not just a search result or map pin. Check the waterbody and affected area, issue or sample date, advisory level or restriction, activities covered, and whether the issuing authority has updated or lifted the notice. If the page is unclear or appears stale, contact the agency listed on it.
Check the notice against water-quality records
Use How’s My Waterway for reported conditions and monitoring
Search the waterway in How’s My Waterway to review reported conditions, monitoring, and identified water-quality issues. The tool presents information at community, state, and national scales and uses data provided to EPA by state, federal, Tribal, and local agencies and others. Follow links to state information when available.
EPA cautions that newer or more detailed information may exist outside its databases. A missing entry does not prove that the water is clean or that no advisory exists. If your immediate question is whether a particular access point has a current health notice, verify that directly with the responsible agency.

- What Is Blue-Green Algae? Blue-green algae is a type of cyanobacteria found in warm, nutrient-rich bodies of water including lakes, ponds, rivers and reservoirs. These algal blooms occur mostly during the warmer months but can happen year-round if conditions align.
- Why Should You Care? Exposure to harmful blue-green algae can cause people and animals to have severe illnesses and may even be fatal. If any of these symptoms occur, it is crucial to seek professional care immediately.
- Rapid Response Detection. Detect harmful blue-green algae in just 10 minutes. Our easy, accurate and fast water test kit allows you to check for the presence of blue-green algae in any body of water before it causes harm to you, your family, or your pets.
- Easy To Use. (1) Fill the provided sample container with water. (2) Leave the container to stand for 10 minutes. A chemical reaction will occur and heat the container. (3) Use the included pipette to place one drop of water into the provided analysis slide’s aperture, and your results will be ready to review! 1 line at C indicates no blue-green algae toxins detected, and 2 lines at C indicate harmful blue-green algae is present.
- The Only On-Site Blue-Green Algae Test Kit. 5Strands is proud to offer the ONLY on-site blue-green algae test kit on the market. With 99% accuracy and results in just 10 minutes, this is a must-have before enjoying water activities at a lake, pond, or ocean.
Separate a nutrient impairment from a current HAB advisory
Excess nitrogen and phosphorus can promote plant and algal growth, contribute to harmful blooms, reduce light penetration, and lower dissolved oxygen. These effects can harm aquatic life and recreation. But a nutrient-pollution record and a HAB advisory answer different questions:
- An impairment listing documents an assessment against water-quality standards and designated uses. It can indicate a problem requiring attention or restoration planning, such as a total maximum daily load (TMDL). It does not establish that a harmful bloom is present now at a particular access point.
- A HAB advisory communicates a current or potential health risk and may specify activities to avoid. Its status, area, and restrictions come from the authority issuing the notice.
EPA’s nutrient pollution guidance explains nutrient effects, while its water-quality reporting information describes how states assess and report water quality. Use those records to understand longer-term conditions, not as a real-time safety determination.

Use forecasts and visual observations cautiously
Forecasts are not site-specific safety clearances
EPA’s freshwater cyanoHAB forecast is a weekly probability forecast for more than 2,000 large lakes and reservoirs in the lower 48 states. EPA defines a forecast bloom using a median lake chlorophyll-a level of at least 12 micrograms per liter with cyanobacteria dominance. EPA reports 90% overall prediction accuracy for model predictions validated with CyAN satellite data; that is forecast-model accuracy, not the probability that a particular swimming spot is safe.
EPA cautions that forecasts do not replace sampling or observation. Satellite coverage may miss or fail to resolve shallow shorelines, narrow lake segments, and small embayments. A forecast may therefore be useful context for a lake it covers, but it cannot confirm conditions at every shore or access point.

Appearance is a warning, not a toxin test
Water that looks suspicious is a reason to avoid contact and report it—not a reliable way to determine whether toxins are present. EPA’s bloomWatch guidance says, “When in doubt, stay out!” Report suspected blooms to the responsible local authority or through bloomWatch, and follow the authority’s instructions. Do not treat an ordinary-looking appearance as proof that water is safe.
Know which authority and information source to follow
EPA’s summary of responsibilities under HABHRCA says NOAA is primarily responsible for estuarine, marine, and Great Lakes waterbodies, while EPA is primarily responsible for other freshwaters. State, Tribal, and local programs also publish alerts and response information. For a coastal or brackish site, follow the agency responsible for that waterbody and location, including relevant state or local notices.

The sources serve different purposes. Compare them by the date of the information, how closely its geography matches your access point, what evidence it represents, and whether it gives activity restrictions for today. An agency advisory, a lab sample, a satellite forecast, a visual report, a nutrient measurement, and a formal impairment assessment are not interchangeable.

EPA’s How’s My Waterway national page reports high nutrient levels in 44% of rivers and streams, 50% of lakes, and 17% of coastal waters. These are national survey figures presented by EPA’s page, accessed October 4, 2026—not current samples from a particular local waterway. They can describe a broad national concern, but they cannot tell you whether a nearby site has an advisory today.
