To verify whether a movie studio or production company is actually using a brand name, look for several kinds of evidence: current company-controlled material using the name, credits tying it to specific productions, the legal entity’s status in its jurisdiction, and trademark records for the mark. Each answers a different question. A website, business registration, trademark record, or film credit alone does not prove all of them.
First, separate the questions you are trying to answer
A company’s legal existence, its use of a brand, its involvement in a film, and its trademark rights are related but distinct facts. A registered company can exist without currently marketing production services under its name. A trademark record documents an application or registration; it is not a live feed of production activity. A film credit can tie a name to a particular work and role, but does not by itself establish that the entity remains active or owns a trademark.
The USPTO explains that “using a business name doesn’t necessarily qualify as trademark use, but using it as the source of goods or services might qualify it as both a business name and a trademark.” See the USPTO’s trademark-process guidance. State what each source actually supports rather than treating one record as a definitive answer to every question.

Use this workflow to check the name
1. Write down the exact claim
Record the exact spelling, punctuation, logo wording, claimed website, and any alternate legal name. Clarify what “studio” means in context: a production brand, a physical facility, a distributor label, or a corporate group. Search the exact wording and meaningful variants. The USPTO search help describes searching by phrase and fields such as wordmark, owner, goods and services, and live status.

2. Look for current first-party use
Check the company’s official website and recent announcements for the name in a context that identifies the source: an about page, production slate, project page, press material, or contact and legal footer. Note the page title and the date you viewed it. This establishes what the company currently claims about itself; it does not independently prove that a production took place. Where possible, corroborate the claim with credits or third-party production or distribution materials.
3. Tie the name to a specific production
Find one or more named films and check their end credits, official film pages, festival or programme materials, distributor pages, and available work metadata. Note the wording of the role: “produced by,” “presented by,” “financed by,” and “distributed by” do not mean the same thing. UK government orphan-works diligent-search guidance recommends checking credits, embedded information, and metadata for studio, distributor, producer, or rights-holder clues.

A credit is evidence that the name was attached to that work in the stated role. Its date matters: a credit on an older film does not show that the company is using the name today, and a credit alone does not establish current corporate status, trademark ownership, or control of all exploitation rights.

4. Check the legal entity in the right jurisdiction
Search the official company register for the exact legal name and variants in the entity’s jurisdiction. Record the company or entity number, status, incorporation date, previous names, filing history, and stated activity where those details are available. For example, the UK Companies House record for Trademark Films Ltd shows company information including status, incorporation date, filings, and the activity classification “Motion picture production activities.” That example illustrates what a register can show; it is not evidence about a different studio or proof of present-day brand use.

For a U.S. business, corporate formation records are generally held by the relevant state office; a federal trademark result is not a company-registration result. The USPTO explains that filing with a state is one way to form a business entity in its trademark-process guidance.
5. Search trademark records separately
For U.S. federal marks, use the USPTO Trademark Search system. Search the exact wording and meaningful variants, then inspect the owner, application or registration status, goods and services, dates, and record documents. The USPTO database includes registered and applied-for marks; its search help explains search fields and approaches.

For wider international screening, search the WIPO Global Brand Database by name, owner, number, or goods and services. WIPO says it includes Madrid-system records and participating national or regional collections, and advises that it may be prudent to check national or regional registers too. See WIPO’s trademark information. Its coverage is not a guarantee that every relevant local record is included.
Read the record rather than relying on a matching name. An application may be pending or abandoned; a registration may belong to another owner, cover a different territory, or apply to different goods or services. Even a live registration does not demonstrate that the studio currently has active productions.

6. Investigate discrepancies instead of guessing
If a production credit, website, company register, and trademark record show different names, look for documented explanations such as a parent or subsidiary relationship, former name, “doing business as” name, production-specific entity, assignment, or distribution arrangement. Check registry filing history and official company disclosures where available. Similar names alone are not proof that two organizations are the same company. If the company or jurisdiction is unclear, the available evidence may not resolve the identity conclusively.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to weigh conflicting evidence
Compare the exact name and spelling, the date and recency, the source’s authority, the role stated, the relevant jurisdiction or territory, and the kind of fact recorded. An official register is strong evidence about entity status; a trademark database is evidence about trademark filings and rights; a work credit is evidence about the named role on that work. A company-controlled page is evidence of the company’s own current claims, not independent confirmation of them.
- Strong evidence of current brand use: recent company-controlled material uses the name to identify production services or projects, with named work or other corroboration.
- Strong evidence of a production connection: a dated credit or reliable production record names the company in a specific role.
- Evidence of legal status: an official registry entry identifies the entity and its current recorded status in its jurisdiction.
- Evidence of trademark records: an official database entry identifies an owner, status, territory, and covered goods or services.
There is no universal activity threshold established by these sources for what counts as “actually using” a name. Describe the concrete evidence and its date rather than turning a collection of records into an unsupported legal conclusion.
