A product key that activates Office once is not proof that a seller had the right to sell it, and “lifetime” is not a Microsoft license category by itself. The reliable check is to identify the exact edition and license channel, redeem or associate it with the correct Microsoft account through Microsoft’s official setup flow, and verify that the product appears under Services & subscriptions. Transfer rights then depend on the edition, country, and whether you are moving the license to your own computer or giving it to another person.
Use the steps below before paying for a used key, reinstalling Office, or assuming that an activation message makes an entitlement legitimate.
What “lifetime Office license” actually tells you
“Lifetime” usually means a one-time purchase rather than a recurring Microsoft 365 subscription. It does not identify the Office edition, the permitted number of devices, the license channel, the country rules, or whether the seller may transfer the entitlement. A listing can use the word while offering a retail license, an OEM/preinstalled entitlement, a workplace benefit, a volume-license key, or a key that was obtained or resold improperly.
Start by recording the facts that determine the terms:

- Exact product and edition, such as Office Home, Office Home & Student, Office Home & Business, Office 2021, or Office 2024.
- Whether it is a one-time purchase, a Microsoft 365 subscription, or an entitlement supplied with a computer.
- How it was originally distributed: retail, preinstalled/OEM, workplace benefit, or volume licensing.
- Seller name, invoice or receipt, country of sale, and any stated refund policy.
- Whether the key is unused or the product is already linked to a Microsoft account.
Those details matter more than the word “lifetime” or the price of the key.
The strongest self-service test: check the Microsoft account
For many home Office purchases, Microsoft account association is the practical proof that you can install or reinstall the product. It does not by itself prove that a reseller obtained the entitlement lawfully, so retain your purchase evidence as well.
1. Redeem an unused key through Microsoft
- Open Microsoft’s official product-key page: Where to enter your Office product key.
- Use the Office or Microsoft 365 setup link specified by Microsoft and sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the license.
- Enter the key exactly as supplied and complete the redemption prompts. Do not send the key to a third party for “activation.”
- Record the account used, the product name displayed, and the redemption date. Keep the receipt, invoice, packaging, and any certificate-of-authenticity information.
If Microsoft reports This product key has already been used, the key has already been redeemed and is no longer the route to installation. Microsoft’s wording is: “If you see the error This product key has already been used when you enter your product key on www.office.com/setup or Microsoft365.com/setup, this means your product key has already been redeemed and is no longer needed.” Sign in with the Microsoft account that redeemed it and install from that account instead of trying to redeem the code again.

- Sign in to the Microsoft account used at redemption.
- Open the account page and select Services & subscriptions.
- Find the Office product, edition, and installation option. The presence of an install option under the correct account is the useful check for future reinstalls.
- Compare the displayed product with the seller’s description and receipt. A mismatch is a reason to stop and contact the seller or Microsoft Support.
Account association is especially important when a seller gives you a key that was redeemed before delivery. You should receive control of the associated entitlement, not merely a code that activates once on someone else’s account.

3. Check an installed copy in Word, Excel, or another Office app
- Open an installed Office application.
- Select File > Account (in some apps this is shown as Office Account).
- Review the account shown under the product information and compare it with the account you expect to own the license.
Microsoft does not normally display the complete product key in Office or generally online. The account association, product name, and installation controls are therefore more useful than searching the application for a full key.
Why activation alone does not prove a genuine license
Activation is a technical state: Microsoft’s servers accepted a key or entitlement for a particular installation at that time. It does not establish that the seller owned transferable rights. Microsoft warns that keys sold separately can be stolen, abused, unauthorized for resale, printed on counterfeit labels or cards, or later blocked. A key can therefore work initially and still fail the legal or contractual test for a genuine purchase.
Be particularly cautious when a listing supplies only a bare code, a photograph of a key, or Microsoft-branded media without a traceable invoice. Microsoft’s guidance on genuine licensing and counterfeit packaging is available at Stay safe with a genuine Office license.

- Ask for the exact edition, license channel, country of origin, and proof of purchase.
- Ask whether the key was ever redeemed and, if so, which account owns it.
- Obtain written transfer terms and a refund route before paying.
- Do not treat a low price, a successful activation, or a branded card as independent proof of legitimacy.
If a separately sold key does not work or later stops working, Microsoft advises asking the seller for a refund. Microsoft Support cannot turn an unauthorized resale into a valid entitlement.

Can you transfer Office to a new computer?
For one-time purchases of Office 2024 and Office 2021, Microsoft’s current transfer guidance allows the license holder to move the software to another computer belonging to that same person no more than once every 90 days, except when hardware failure requires an earlier move. You must remove Office from the old computer and keep no copy there. The rule is about the exact edition and terms; do not apply it automatically to older releases, OEM/preinstalled software, workplace benefits, or volume licenses.

Microsoft’s support page states: “You can install a one-time purchase of Office such as Office Home & Business, Office Home & Student, or Office Home on only 1 PC or Mac.” That installation limit and the transfer conditions apply to the relevant license terms, not to every product marketed as “lifetime.” Read Microsoft’s current page, Transfer your Office license to another device or another person, for the edition you own.
Moving Office 2024 or 2021 to your replacement computer
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the one-time purchase and confirm the product in Services & subscriptions.
- On the old computer, uninstall Office and sign out where the product’s installation controls require it. Keep no usable copy on that device.
- On the replacement PC or Mac, use Microsoft’s official installation instructions at Download, install, or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 on a PC or Mac.
- Sign in with the owning account and select the listed Office product. If activation fails after a legitimate move, follow Activate Office after reinstalling or installing on a different device and retain your receipt.
Is a used Office product key transferable to another person?
Do not infer person-to-person resale rights from the 90-day device-transfer rule. Moving a license to another computer that you own is a different question from selling or gifting it to somebody else.

Microsoft’s cited guidance describes a customer-support process for users in the European Economic Area (EEA) where applicable law permits a transfer to another person. The process requires verification of identity and legitimate license rights, and Microsoft may need information about both parties and the entitlement. Eligibility is geography- and product-dependent. A seller outside that process cannot promise that an EEA rule applies to a buyer elsewhere, and an EEA buyer should not assume that every edition qualifies.

For a proposed person-to-person transfer:
- Identify the exact Office edition and original license channel.
- Check the transfer page for your country and product, then contact Microsoft Support if the wording is unclear.
- Gather the original receipt, account details, product information, and evidence that the seller will stop using the license.
- Do not accept a transfer that leaves the product permanently attached to the seller’s account unless Microsoft confirms a supported change of ownership.
- Use a payment method with a meaningful refund or dispute process, because activation is not proof that the transfer will remain valid.
Compare offers by entitlement, not by key price
When evaluating two “lifetime” offers, use the same questions for each. The offer with the cheaper code is not necessarily the better or even a valid license.

What to do when Office says “Get genuine Office”
Microsoft says the “Get genuine Office” message means it determined that the installed product is not legitimate. Treat it as an entitlement problem, not as a prompt to search for another unofficial activator.
- Save your receipt, order number, seller correspondence, and the Microsoft account currently associated with Office.
- If the purchase was recent, contact the seller and request a refund or a replacement obtained through an authorized channel.
- Do not enter additional keys from unknown websites or run activators; they can create security and licensing problems.
- Remove the counterfeit or unauthorized Office installation before installing genuine software. Use Microsoft’s version-appropriate uninstall instructions. Microsoft’s current support page notes that its Windows uninstall troubleshooter does not currently uninstall Office 2024, so do not assume that tool will remove every 2024 installation.
- After removal, install the genuine product from the Microsoft account that owns it, following Microsoft’s installation guide.
- If the account, transfer status, or refund position remains unclear, contact Microsoft Support with the edition and proof of purchase.
How to reinstall after a legitimate transfer
Reinstallation should begin from the owner’s Microsoft account, not from a downloaded installer supplied by a reseller. The account page establishes which product Microsoft associates with you; the installer then obtains the matching software for your PC or Mac.

- Uninstall Office from the old computer if you are exercising a permitted transfer, and ensure no copy remains there.
- Sign in to Services & subscriptions on the owning Microsoft account.
- Select the Office product and choose the installation option for your operating system.
- Open Word after installation, choose File > Account, and verify that the expected account and edition are displayed.
- If activation asks for a key you no longer have, use the account association and Microsoft’s activation guidance rather than buying a second code immediately.

When buying a replacement is the safer choice
If the old key cannot be linked to an account you control, the seller cannot provide proof of purchase, or Microsoft confirms that the channel is not transferable, treat the entitlement as unverified. A new genuine one-time purchase can be a practical replacement, but it does not authenticate the old key or cure a disputed transfer.
If you choose a replacement, search for the exact product rather than a generic “lifetime” offer. A relevant description is Microsoft Office 2024 one-time purchase. Before paying, confirm the edition, Windows or Mac compatibility, number of permitted devices, country, seller identity, fulfillment method, and refund terms. Prefer Microsoft or an authorized software retailer and redeem the purchase directly into your own Microsoft account.
A decision checklist
- Account check passed: The expected Office product appears under your Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions, and the app’s File > Account page shows the same owner.
- Edition identified: You know whether it is Office 2024, Office 2021, an older release, a subscription, OEM/preinstalled software, a workplace benefit, or volume licensing.
- Device move: For Office 2024 or 2021 one-time purchases, you have removed Office from the old computer and are observing the no-more-than-once-every-90-days rule, unless hardware failure applies.
- Person transfer: You have checked the separate country-specific rules; you have not confused a same-owner device move with resale or gifting.
- Evidence retained: You have the receipt, seller details, redemption account, product description, and refund terms.
- Warning resolved: Any “already used,” “Get genuine Office,” or activation error has been handled through Microsoft or the seller, not an unofficial activator.
If any of these checks fails, pause the transfer or purchase until Microsoft Support or the seller provides a resolution in writing.
