The safest way to find out is to review the exact medicine—not just the drug class—with a licensed clinician who knows your health history. Check that its FDA-approved use fits your situation, discuss your medical and family history and other medicines, and weigh potential benefits, risks, cost, access, and your preferences. This guide is general information, not a personal risk assessment or prescription recommendation.
Start by identifying the exact medicine
“GLP-1 weight-loss drug” is often used as a broad label, but medicines in this area are not all the same. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Tirzepatide, sold as Zepbound for weight management, activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Brand, active ingredient, and approved indication matter: semaglutide products with other brand names have different indications and should not be treated as interchangeable with Wegovy.
| Product | Active ingredient and action | What the cited FDA information establishes | Checks to raise with your clinician |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wegovy | Semaglutide; GLP-1 receptor agonist | FDA-labeled for weight management. Confirm the current label’s precise criteria for your situation. | The Wegovy label’s contraindications and product-specific warnings, pregnancy timing, and possible effects on oral medicines. |
| Zepbound | Tirzepatide; GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist | With reduced-calorie eating and increased physical activity, for long-term reduction and maintenance of body weight in adults with obesity or adults with overweight and at least one weight-related condition. | Its own prescribing information, including warnings about gastrointestinal reactions, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, hypoglycemia, kidney injury, and hypersensitivity. |
These descriptions reflect FDA information available in the Wegovy prescribing information revised March 2026 and the Zepbound label listing dated January 2026. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist to confirm the current label for the exact product being considered.
Check whether the approved use fits you
Ask your clinician to confirm your diagnosis and compare it with the medicine’s current FDA-approved indication. The American College of Physicians’ April 2026 living guideline suggests semaglutide or tirzepatide alongside lifestyle modifications for nonpregnant adults with obesity and for certain adults with overweight plus a specified weight-related condition. That guideline does not determine whether a particular product is suitable for you; the product label and your individual circumstances still matter.

Review contraindications, health history, and other medicines
Ask about personal and family history
The Wegovy label contraindicates use in people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in people with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), and in people with serious hypersensitivity to the product. The label says it is unknown whether the thyroid C-cell tumor finding in rodents applies to humans. Tell your clinician about relevant personal and family medical history so they can check the exact product’s label rather than applying one medicine’s rules to the whole class.

Make a complete medication list
List prescription medicines, nonprescription drugs, and supplements, including doses if known. Wegovy’s label notes delayed gastric emptying and possible effects on absorption of oral medicines. The label also warns about hypoglycemia when it is combined with insulin or an insulin secretagogue. Zepbound has its own warnings, including hypoglycemia. If you take diabetes medicines or drugs that must be absorbed reliably, ask the prescriber how the combination will be managed and monitored; do not change doses on your own.

Discuss conditions that may affect monitoring
Wegovy’s label warns about pancreatitis, acute gallbladder disease, and acute kidney injury related to volume depletion. Zepbound’s label includes warnings about severe gastrointestinal reactions, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, hypoglycemia, acute kidney injury, and hypersensitivity. These are label warnings, not predictions that you will experience an adverse reaction. Ask which symptoms or changes in your health warrant a call to your care team, and what follow-up is appropriate for your circumstances.

Address pregnancy and planned procedures before treatment
Pregnancy plans
For Wegovy used for weight reduction, the current label says to discontinue when pregnancy is recognized and to stop at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Tell your clinician if you are pregnant, might become pregnant, or are planning pregnancy; do not assume the same timing applies to every product. Ask for the exact medicine’s instructions.
Surgery, anesthesia, or deep sedation
Tell the clinicians managing a planned surgery or procedure that you use—or are considering—a GLP-1 or related medicine. Prescribing information addresses the possibility of pulmonary aspiration during general anesthesia or deep sedation. The procedural team can review the relevant medicine and plan; do not make a medication change based on a general rule or someone else’s instructions.

Confirm what product you would actually receive
Ask the prescriber and pharmacist to identify the exact product, active ingredient, and whether it is FDA-approved. FDA says compounded drugs do not undergo FDA premarket review for safety, quality, or effectiveness, and has described dosing errors and concerns involving unapproved GLP-1 products. A compounded product should not be assumed interchangeable with an FDA-approved medicine. If the product offered differs from the one discussed with your clinician, pause and ask the pharmacist and prescriber to explain the difference before using it.

Ask your clinician to compare the options against the factors the ACP names: expected benefits, harms, costs, access and availability, relevant coexisting conditions, weight goals, life expectancy, personal values and preferences, and contraindications or warnings such as pregnancy. A medicine may be a reasonable option for one person and unsuitable for another. The FDA-approved label describes use under specified conditions; it is not proof that a medicine is safe for every person or every use.

Prepare for the prescribing visit
Bring the information needed to check your specific case, rather than asking only whether “GLP-1 drugs” are safe in general:
- Your current medication and supplement list, including diabetes treatments.
- Your medical history and relevant family history, including any history of MTC or MEN 2.
- Any pregnancy plans and upcoming procedures involving anesthesia or deep sedation.
- Your diagnoses, weight-management goals, and questions about expected benefit, potential harms, monitoring, cost, and availability.
- The name or packaging details of the product you have been offered, if it is not the FDA-approved product your prescriber discussed.
Ask the clinician to show you the current prescribing information for that product and explain which parts apply to your history. A clear plan should identify the product, why its indication fits, what risks or interactions need attention, and how to contact the care team with concerns.
