To find out whether a player is eligible for an upcoming match, identify the exact fixture and competition, then check its current rules and the player’s official registration and disciplinary status. Also verify squad-list requirements and any match-specific restrictions with the club, league, association, or competition administrator. Eligibility, selection, and fitness to play are separate questions.
1. Identify the fixture and the rules that apply
Start with the exact match: the teams, date, and competition. A domestic league, cup, continental club tournament, friendly, youth match, and national-team fixture may follow different eligibility rules. Find the current-season regulations for that competition and any applicable association rules; do not rely on rules from another competition or season.
For example, UEFA Champions League regulations for 2026/27 set out player-registration requirements in Article 30. That article requires players to be duly registered with the national association for their club under association and FIFA rules: UEFA Champions League 2026/27, Article 30.

For a club fixture, verify that the player is officially registered for the relevant club under the association’s and competition’s rules. Check whether the applicable registration deadline has passed and whether the required confirmation has been received. The deadline and confirmation process are competition-specific, not universal.

The English Football League’s Section Six regulations provide an example of league-specific eligibility and confirmation procedures. Where registration confirmation is unclear, the EFL directs clubs to check through league channels: EFL Regulations, Section Six.
3. Check suspensions and other restrictions
Review the player’s current disciplinary status and the competition’s rules for serving suspensions. Do not assume a suspension carries over between competitions in a particular way: the applicable disciplinary regulations determine that. If the player’s record or the effect of a ban is uncertain, ask the competition administrator or relevant association to confirm it.

4. Verify squad-list and match-day requirements
Check whether the player can be included on any required competition squad list and whether the match sheet meets the competition’s conditions. IFAB Law 3 covers team lists and participation, while UEFA’s Champions League regulations separately address registration and permit identity checks for players listed on a match sheet: IFAB Law 3: The Players.

5. Use a separate check for national-team eligibility
Club registration does not establish that a player may represent a national association. National-team eligibility follows FIFA’s representative-team framework, which addresses nationality, residence, prior representative-team appearances, and requests concerning eligibility or a change of association. FIFA’s guidance published on 10 September 2026 explains the framework and process: FIFA guidance on player eligibility and change of association. For an uncertain case, seek confirmation from the national association and follow the relevant FIFA process.
6. Ask the responsible authority if the answer is unclear
Club news, projected lineups, and fan-facing team pages can indicate likely availability, but they may not establish formal eligibility. For an unresolved registration, suspension, or rule question, contact the club or the body responsible for the competition: the league, association, or tournament administrator. That authority can apply the current rules to the player’s record and the specific fixture.

Eligibility is not the same as selection or fitness
- Eligible: The player satisfies the formal rules for taking part in that competition and match.
- Selected: The club or national team chooses the player for the squad or lineup.
- Fit to play: The player is medically available to participate.
An injury update addresses availability, while a lineup addresses selection. Neither alone settles formal eligibility.
What the minimum-player rule does—and does not—tell you
IFAB Law 3 states: “A match may not start or continue if either team has fewer than seven players.” The law includes qualifications and competition-regulation context. This is a minimum team-size rule; it does not determine whether a particular individual is registered or otherwise eligible.
Quick checklist
- Identify the exact fixture and competition, and find the current regulations.
- For a club match, confirm official registration and any required deadline or confirmation.
- Check the player’s disciplinary status and how the relevant competition applies suspensions.
- Verify squad-list and match-sheet requirements.
- For a national-team match, check FIFA’s representative-team rules separately from club registration.
- Ask the responsible club, league, association, or competition administrator to resolve any uncertainty.
IFAB publishes editions of the Laws of the Game in its Laws of the Game documents catalogue; use the edition and competition regulations that apply to the fixture in question.
