Before buying a phone on Flipkart, check the exact model and condition, seller, warranty and return terms, then verify the handset’s IMEI through the Government of India’s CEIR service when you can. A low price alone does not prove fraud, and a clean IMEI result is only one check—not proof that the seller is authorised or the phone is new.
Check the listing before you pay
Review the offer as a set of separate details rather than relying on the discount or star rating. Match the listing against the phone you intend to buy and save a screenshot of the offer and its terms.
- Exact device: brand, model number, RAM, storage, colour and network variant.
- Condition: confirm whether it is described as new, refurbished or open-box.
- What is included: check the listed accessories and package contents.
- Seller: note the seller name and read recent feedback for the specific item. Ratings are clues, not proof of authenticity.
- Warranty and returns: read the written warranty, replacement and return terms shown for that offer. Do not assume every phone has the same return window.
- Price and charges: compare the final price, including applicable charges, with other offers for the same configuration. There is no established discount threshold that makes a deal safe or fraudulent.
Flipkart’s Seller Terms of Use place responsibility on sellers to ensure products are genuine and listings are not misleading. The terms also say Flipkart does not guarantee that listing descriptions or other content are accurate, complete, reliable, current or error-free. That makes checking the specific offer important.
Verify the IMEI through the official CEIR service
An IMEI is a 15-digit identifier for a mobile device. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) says it can appear on the phone’s packaging and may be printed on the invoice. On a handset, dial *#06# to display it. Dual-SIM phones have two IMEI numbers; check both when applicable.

- Get the IMEI. If the seller can provide it before purchase, use that number; otherwise, check it when the phone arrives. You can also use the number printed on the box or invoice.
- Submit it to CEIR. Send an SMS in the format
KYM 123456789012345to14422, replacing the example with the phone’s 15-digit IMEI. Alternatively, use the official CEIR/Sanchar Saathi portal. - Compare the result. CEIR returns manufacturer, device type, brand and model details. Check that these align with the listing and, once delivered, the packaging and handset.
- Stop on a warning or mismatch. Do not proceed if CEIR reports the device as black-listed, duplicate or already in use, or if the returned details conflict with the offer. Do not rely on a seller’s reassurance to override a concerning result.
The DoT’s “Know Genuineness of Your Mobile Handset” guidance specifically advises buyers to avoid a phone shown as black-listed, duplicate or already in use.
Know what a clean IMEI result can—and cannot—tell you
CEIR is useful for checking device information and status, but its result is not a complete authentication certificate. A matching, non-flagged result does not establish that:

- the Flipkart seller is an authorised dealer;
- the listing description is accurate;
- the phone is factory-sealed, unused or genuinely new;
- the manufacturer will honour the warranty in India; or
- the asking price is a good deal.
Where available, verify warranty eligibility and seller status through the phone maker’s official India channel. Use the written, offer-specific terms to understand returns and replacement options. A third-party IMEI checker is not a substitute for the government CEIR service.

If you are choosing between listings, compare like with like. A lower price may reflect a different configuration, condition or set of terms, so the discount percentage alone is not a meaningful authenticity check.

Neither the sources cited here nor the listing checks establish a universal “safe” discount percentage. Judge each offer by its details and the consistency of its identifiers.
Check the phone when it arrives
Before setting up the phone, compare the model and identifiers on the handset, box and invoice with the order. Keep the packaging and take clear records if anything differs.

- Record the order, listing, invoice and any relevant seller communications.
- Check the handset’s model and IMEI using
*#06#, then compare them with the box, invoice and CEIR result. - If the delivered model, condition or IMEI does not match the offer, raise the issue through Flipkart’s Help Centre using the order-specific support, return/refund or seller-contact route.
Flipkart’s Help Centre provides routes for orders, seller contact, returns and refunds. The remedy and deadline depend on the current terms for your order; there is no single universal mobile-phone return window established here. Keep the purchase and payment on Flipkart so the order and its support routes remain available.
Why a low price or platform-wide claim is not enough
A steep discount is a reason to scrutinise the offer, not proof that it is fraudulent. Likewise, broad promotional statements about genuine products or secure shopping do not verify an individual listing or handset. The decisive checks are the offer’s specific terms, the device information and status returned by CEIR, and whether the delivered phone matches what you ordered.
