You cannot prove a fan-made game port is safe from its name, download host, or a clean antivirus scan alone. Before opening it, trace the link to the creator’s own page, verify that the release details match, and scan the exact file with protection enabled. If a warning remains unexplained, do not run the port.
Start with the creator’s own download link
Find the project’s established page or official account yourself, then follow the download link posted there. A link shared in a Discord server, forum, video description, or direct message is not enough on its own—even if it points to a familiar hosting platform. Navigate back to the creator’s page and see whether it links to the same file.
Steam advises users to be skeptical of software links shared by other people, including links hosted on platforms they normally trust. itch.io’s creator guidance encourages creators to upload files directly and discourages third-party download services. These are useful provenance signals, not guarantees that every file on either platform is safe: Steam’s account security recommendations and itch.io’s quality guidelines.

Compare the download page and file description with the creator’s release announcement. Look for the same project name, creator or publisher account, platform, version, and description. A mismatch, an unsolicited download, or a request to install unrelated software or provide login details is a reason to stop.

Steam warns that malware targeting players can be disguised as pirated software, fake demos or betas, cheats, and gaming utilities. A download that uses those lures deserves extra caution, even if its filename resembles the game you want. See Steam’s guidance on account security.
Use digital signatures only when you know who should have signed
A valid digital signature can help confirm a file’s publisher when you already know the expected signer. It does not show that the software is harmless, and many fan-made ports will not have a signature you can verify against a known publisher.

For example, itch.io says its own app and installers are signed with a certificate in the name of itch corp. Its guidance says not to use an installer pretending to be the itch app if that signature is missing. That advice applies to itch.io’s installer—not to every game hosted on itch.io or to fan-made ports in general. Read itch.io’s Windows installation guidance.
Scan the exact download, but do not treat a clean result as proof
Keep antivirus protection enabled and up to date, and scan the file you actually downloaded. A scanner may identify known or suspected threats, but a clean result cannot prove that a file contains no malware. Steam warns that some bespoke malware can evade common antivirus detection.

On Windows, Microsoft’s guidance covers updating Microsoft Defender security intelligence and running a full scan. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for protecting your PC from unwanted software. Scanning adds a useful check; it does not replace verifying the download’s source and release details.
What to do if antivirus flags the port
- Do not run the file. Leave protection enabled and do not dismiss the warning just to launch the game.
- Check the detection against the official release. Confirm that you downloaded the file linked by the creator and that its project and version details match the announcement.
- Escalate an unresolved alert. Steam notes that false positives occur, but recommends taking detections seriously. If you are uncertain, report the app and contact your antivirus provider rather than immediately making an exception. See Steam’s advice about antivirus reports on games.
- Do not create a broad exclusion. Never disable antivirus or exclude a broad folder just to make a game launch. itch.io specifically warns Windows users not to exclude the entire
%APPDATA%itchfolder, because that would stop antivirus from scanning installed games. This warning is about the itch app; it is not a general recommendation to change Windows exclusions. See itch.io’s Windows guidance.
How much confidence each check gives you

itch.io’s policy prohibits malware, spyware, and adware and encourages direct uploads. That is a platform policy, not a certification of every individual download. None of these checks alone turns uncertainty into a guarantee.
