Open the stream’s YouTube watch page and check whether YouTube identifies it as a current live broadcast. If you’re unsure, cross-check YouTube’s Live section. A 24/7 title, moving animation, or playable video is not proof that the broadcast is still live: a stream can end and remain available as a replay or video.
Check the stream on YouTube
- Open the specific stream’s YouTube watch page. Look for YouTube’s current-live presentation of the broadcast. The exact label or indicator can vary by device, app, geography, and interface updates, so don’t rely on a particular badge, color, or placement.
- Cross-check YouTube’s Live section if the status is unclear. Browse current streams and see whether the same broadcast or channel appears there. YouTube Help describes the Live destination as a way to browse current and upcoming streams.
- Use Live Chat only as a supporting clue. Chat may be available on a live stream’s watch page, but its presence by itself is not a definitive status test. Chat is also unavailable in embedded players, so check the YouTube watch page directly.
YouTube describes live streams as media broadcast in real time. The key question is whether YouTube is presenting this broadcast as live now—not whether the player can still show its video.
Tell a live broadcast from a replay
A 24/7 cartoon stream can end and still have playable content on its channel. YouTube says a channel may post highlights or a replay after a live stream is over, and those appear as videos. Continuous-looking animation, a familiar title, and playback that keeps running therefore do not establish that the broadcast is currently live.

For the same reason, don’t treat a replay’s availability—or a stream embedded on another site—as confirmation of live status. Return to the stream’s YouTube watch page and use YouTube’s own live presentation; if needed, check the Live section as well.

For channel owners: check broadcast status through the API
If you administer the channel and need a technical check, YouTube’s Live Streaming API provides a more direct status route than watching the player. Its liveBroadcasts.list method accepts a broadcastStatus filter. Set it to active to return current live broadcasts. The request must be authorized; the mine option applies to the authenticated user’s own broadcasts, not an anonymous lookup of any channel.
The API distinguishes the incoming video feed from the broadcast viewers watch. A liveStream resource represents the feed sent to YouTube; a liveBroadcast resource represents the event. The feed’s status.streamStatus can be active while the broadcast has a separate lifecycle status. Receiving video is not, by itself, proof that viewers can watch a public live broadcast. For the viewer-facing question, check the broadcast status.

Allow for startup transitions
After a start action, a broadcast typically takes 5–10 seconds to become live and can take up to one minute. During the transition, its lifecycle may be liveStarting; once it reaches live, viewers can watch it. If you have just started the stream, check again after the transition rather than treating a brief delay as proof that it failed. This is API workflow guidance; it does not guarantee that every viewer interface updates with identical timing.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you’re checking because you want a prerecorded cartoon or other uploaded video to keep running as a YouTube livestream, StreamNeo is a separate way to operate that stream: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera, and it does not replace the YouTube watch-page or API checks above.
