To check what ChatGPT may remember, open Settings > Personalization > Memory. The controls shown can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. You can also ask ChatGPT, “What do you remember about me?” A Memory summary, if available, is only a high-level view—not a complete inventory of every detail or source ChatGPT may use.
Review what ChatGPT may use to personalize replies
- Open your profile menu and select Settings.
- Choose Personalization, then open Memory.
- Review the controls available in your account. Depending on the current experience, you may see options such as Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories.
OpenAI says a Memory summary is a high-level view of information ChatGPT may use to personalize responses; it may omit details and source material. Some accounts let you correct the summary, highlight text and provide a correction, or open sources shown beneath a response. The labels and features available to you may differ. OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT guide describes the current controls.
You can also ask ChatGPT directly what it remembers about you. Treat the answer as a useful way to inspect or question personalization, not as a complete audit of all information that may be available to ChatGPT.

Understand the different sources of personalization
Saved memories
Saved memories are stored separately from the chats where you shared them. As a result, deleting a chat does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from it. Review and remove saved items through the memory controls available in your account.

Reference chat history
When chat-history reference is available and enabled, ChatGPT may use relevant information from past conversations. The useful information it references can change as its view of the context updates. This is separate from saved memories: deleting a saved memory does not by itself erase the chat that supplied the information, and deleting a chat alone may not remove a saved memory. OpenAI’s Memory FAQ provides additional details; follow the controls actually shown in your account because wording can change.
Other possible sources
Custom instructions are another separate source of personalization. Depending on what is available and connected in your account, relevant files in Library or content from connected apps may also be used. Check those sources if the information you want removed may have come from a file or app.

Remove information from the sources where it exists
If you want ChatGPT to stop using a detail, address both the memory and the source that contains it. Depending on where the information came from, use this checklist:

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Remove the item from Manage or Saved memories, if those controls are available.
- Delete the chat where you first shared the information.
- Check other regular or archived chats that may contain the same information, and delete the relevant ones.
- Delete relevant files from Library.
- If a connected app is the source, disconnect it where that option is available.
- Review custom instructions separately if you entered the detail there.
Asking ChatGPT not to mention or use something again may affect future personalization, but it does not erase the underlying chat, file, email, or other source. Where the controls permit, directly correct or delete the saved-memory entry as well.

Know what the privacy controls do—and do not do

OpenAI says deleted-memory logs may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging, and that memory deletions or updates can take time to propagate. These retention statements describe OpenAI’s product handling; they are not a promise that every source is erased by one control.
