Listen for the page’s dialog event, then call dialog.type() on the Dialog object passed to the handler. Puppeteer documents the result as Protocol.Page.DialogType.

Check the dialog type in the event handler

Register a listener before the page action that might open a dialog. The handler receives the Dialog instance, and type() identifies what kind of dialog appeared.

page.on('dialog', async dialog => {
  const type = dialog.type();
  console.log(type);

  // Respond as appropriate for your application.
  await dialog.dismiss();
});

Puppeteer’s Dialog reference says instances are dispatched by the Page through its dialog event: Dialog class. The API documents type() as returning Protocol.Page.DialogType.

What types can the handler identify?

The PageEvent reference names alert, confirm, prompt, and beforeunload as examples of JavaScript dialogs: PageEvent enum. Use the returned type to choose the response your automation should make; do not infer the type from the dialog’s text.

Read the message or prompt default

Use dialog.message() to read the text displayed in the dialog. dialog.defaultValue() returns the prompt’s default value, and returns an empty string when the dialog is not a prompt. That makes type() the appropriate method when you need to determine the actual dialog type. See Puppeteer’s references for defaultValue() and message().

Accept or dismiss the dialog

Puppeteer provides accept() and dismiss() to respond. accept(promptText) accepts optional text, but Puppeteer documents that the text has no effect unless the dialog is a prompt. Choose the response deliberately: dismissing a confirmation or accepting a prompt can change what the page does. See the Dialog class API.

Troubleshoot dialog handling

  • The page appears to hang: check that your listener responds by calling and awaiting accept() or dismiss(). Decide which action is appropriate for the test instead of leaving the dialog unresolved.
  • No type is logged: confirm the listener is attached to the same Page that triggers the dialog, and attach it before the action that opens the dialog.
  • The default value is empty: this is expected for non-prompt dialogs. Check dialog.type() rather than treating the default value as a type indicator.
  • A method or type differs in your project: Puppeteer’s documentation can change across releases. Check the API reference corresponding to the Puppeteer version installed in your project.

For a website screenshot rather than dialog automation, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude and Cursor.
