On a supported macOS version, open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery and check Battery Health. “Normal” means the battery is functioning normally; “Service Recommended” means it holds less charge than when new or is not functioning normally. Check the cycle count separately in System Information, then weigh both readings against your Air’s actual runtime and charging behavior. No single percentage or cycle count is a complete service diagnosis.
Check Battery Health in macOS
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Battery.
- Read the status beside Battery Health. Select the information button beside it, if shown, for the maximum-capacity reading.
Apple defines “Normal” as the battery functioning normally. “Service Recommended” means it holds less charge than when new or is not functioning normally. Apple says you can continue using the Mac before the battery is checked; the recommendation does not mean you must stop using it immediately. If you use an older macOS version
On some older releases, the path is Apple menu > System Preferences > Battery. If Battery Health is not available, Option-click the battery status icon in the menu bar. Depending on the macOS version, older labels may include “Replace Soon,” “Replace Now,” or “Service Battery.” Labels and paths vary by release; an unavailable control can also mean the Mac or its operating system is older.

Maximum capacity compares the battery’s current capacity with its capacity when new. A lower value can mean fewer hours between charges, but it is not by itself a complete service diagnosis or a universal replacement threshold. Apple says a normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count under normal conditions. That is a design expectation tied to the model’s maximum cycle count and operating conditions—not a standalone rule that every MacBook Air at 80% needs replacement. Battery health management may temporarily limit the maximum charge to manage battery aging. A temporarily lower full charge is not automatically evidence of a failed battery. Temperature history and charging patterns also affect chemical aging.
Find the battery cycle count
- Hold the Option key while opening the Apple menu.
- Choose System Information.
- In the sidebar, select Hardware > Power.
- Under Battery Information, find Cycle Count.
A cycle represents use equal to the battery’s full capacity; it can accumulate across multiple partial discharges rather than in one session. Apple’s cycle limit differs by Mac model, so identify your exact MacBook Air and compare its count with the model-specific limit in Apple’s cycle-count guide. Apple recommends replacement for best performance once a model reaches its maximum cycle count, while noting that the Mac can continue to be used and battery life may be reduced. The count is useful context, not a substitute for the battery’s reported condition and your experience using it.

Decide whether to monitor or arrange service

Use macOS’s health reading as your primary condition indicator and your real-world runtime as the measure of whether the battery still meets your needs. Apple cautions that third-party apps reporting battery condition may not accurately or conclusively indicate diminished system runtime.

Choose a qualified service provider and check coverage
For a built-in Mac laptop battery, Apple recommends service through an Apple Store, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or an Independent Repair Provider using genuine Apple parts. Apple warns that untrained repairs or non-genuine parts can damage equipment and affect safety or functionality. Confirm the provider’s status, the parts used, and a quote for your exact Air and location.

Coverage depends on your circumstances and region. Apple’s UK-locale service page describes coverage for a defective battery under the one-year limited warranty and replacement at no charge under an AppleCare Protection Plan when the battery retains less than 80% of its original capacity; out-of-warranty replacement is available for a fee. These terms are not a guarantee of eligibility everywhere, so confirm current coverage and cost with Apple. Apple’s service page has the cited details.
