To check memory use for a Laravel page, measure PHP memory during the request and record both a starting value and the request’s peak. Treat that as PHP-managed memory for one execution path—not the total memory used by its PHP-FPM worker, an Octane worker, or the server. For reliable comparisons, run the same route with the same representative data and environment, and keep cold and warmed requests separate.
What a Laravel page memory reading does—and does not—measure
A request-level PHP memory counter helps answer, “How much PHP-managed memory did this request use?” It can help compare routes or identify a request that deserves profiling. It does not, by itself, report the complete operating-system memory footprint of the PHP process or the host.
Keep the measurement label precise: distinguish the request’s peak from the increase above its starting point, and distinguish both from process or server memory. Laravel Pulse has separate server-resource reporting; its 13.x servers card reports system resource usage for servers running pulse:check.
Measure one request consistently
Use temporary instrumentation that surrounds the route work you want to investigate. Middleware is a practical place to capture a value near request entry and another near completion. Use PHP’s official documentation for the exact memory functions, units, and semantics supported by your project’s PHP version before adding runnable code; the Laravel monitoring tools do not define those PHP API details.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose a representative request. Select the route, input, and data volume that reflect the behavior you need to understand.
- Record a baseline. Capture PHP-managed memory near entry to the request path being measured.
- Record the peak near completion. Capture the peak for that request using a PHP API verified for the deployed PHP version.
- Repeat under matching conditions. Keep the route, data, environment, and warm-up procedure consistent. Compare cold and warmed requests separately when autoloading, caches, or persistent workers may affect results.
- Report the scope. State whether a number is the PHP runtime peak, a change relative to the baseline, or process/server memory. These are not interchangeable measurements.
Send diagnostic values to a protected log or local-only output rather than adding them to ordinary production responses. Remove the temporary code or gate it once the investigation is complete. A single counter can show that a request is costly without showing which code allocated the memory; use a profiler when you need that detail.
Choose the tool for the question
| Need | Suitable view | What it helps answer | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inspect activity in an individual request | Laravel Telescope | Request details and recorded application activity, including queries and other events. | Detailed request debugging, not a server-wide memory counter. |
| Monitor broader performance and server resources | Laravel Pulse and the Pulse product site | Server CPU, memory, and disk, along with slow endpoints and workload activity. | Aggregate and ongoing visibility, not a scoped PHP request counter. |
| Find code contributing to a costly request | A profiler such as Blackfire; Xdebug for debugging | Call-level profiling or interactive debugging context. | More diagnostic detail requires additional setup; Xdebug can alter runtime behavior. |
| Watch for memory retained between requests | Octane worker/process monitoring plus repeated request measurements | Whether memory trends upward as a worker handles requests. | A per-request peak does not show the full persistent-worker trend. |
Laravel recommends Telescope for in-depth debugging of individual events in its Pulse documentation. Pulse provides the broader server and workload view, while a PHP counter is useful when the specific question concerns one request’s PHP-managed memory.

Account for Octane’s persistent workers
With Octane, the application remains in memory between requests. Laravel’s Octane documentation illustrates how a statically maintained array can retain data and grow over time, and recommends monitoring memory during local development. In this setting, compare request readings alongside worker or process trends: a request-level peak alone cannot reveal all memory retained from earlier requests.

Telescope’s request watcher can record request details, headers, session data, and response data; its query watcher records SQL, bindings, and execution time. Treat stored records as potentially sensitive. Follow the Telescope dashboard authorization guidance to restrict access outside local development and ensure the production environment is identified correctly. Telescope’s cited documentation is for Laravel 7.x; check the instructions for the version installed in your application.

Profilers also affect the environment being measured. Laravel’s Homestead documentation warns that Xdebug makes PHP run significantly slower and identifies Blackfire for profiling web requests and CLI applications. Avoid treating a profiled run as a clean representation of ordinary runtime behavior, and compare it with host or process monitoring when operational memory is the concern.
