Open Settings and look near the top of the main screen for an indexing or search-optimisation notice. Apple’s current guidance describes a message that says search and Siri are optimising; the exact wording “Indexing in Progress” was reported in iOS 27 beta 1 and may not appear on every build or in every language.
Check the indexing status in Settings
-
Open Settings on your iPhone.
-
Look near the top of the main Settings screen for a notice about indexing or search and Siri optimisation.

Apple’s Spotlight indexing guidance describes the Settings notification. The beta 1 wording “Indexing in Progress” is documented in 9to5Mac’s report, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed label for later builds.

What the notice means—and how long indexing can take
Spotlight uses an index to find content on your iPhone, including documents, email, messages, contacts, photos, music, podcasts, notes, and settings. Siri can also use indexed content when responding. Apple says the index stays on the device and is not shared with Apple or other devices. Indexing may occur during initial setup, after a software update or upgrade, or when data changes. Apple’s documentation does not establish that this notice is caused by a particular Apple Intelligence model or feature.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Apple says indexing can take hours or even days, depending on how much data needs to be processed. It can finish sooner when the iPhone is idle, connected to power, and connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The iOS 27 beta 1 notice also said the phone could be used normally and that longer charging sessions help; that wording is specific to the beta 1 report.
Why there is no reliable percentage to check
Apple’s documented Settings notification does not show an indexing percentage. An older workaround used Mac Console to search for spotlight indexing progress and inspect PipelineCompleteness. However, iDownloadBlog’s September 18, 2026 update reports that Apple blocked this percentage view in later iOS 27 versions, and 9to5Mac says its method stopped working starting with iOS 27 beta 2. Treat that procedure as obsolete rather than a dependable current check.

If search is still incomplete after the notice disappears
Open Settings > Search and review the affected app’s search settings. Apple notes that app content appears in Spotlight only if the app supports Spotlight indexing, and the iPhone lets you control whether apps appear in Search. See Apple’s iOS 27 Spotlight guide for details.
