Meta’s initial Muse Image rollout briefly let people reference public Instagram accounts by @-mentioning them in generated images, and contemporaneous reports said public accounts were included by default. Meta removed that specific @-mention feature on July 10, 2026, after user criticism. Muse Image and Meta’s other AI image tools are separate from that discontinued account-reference option.
What happened to Instagram photos and Muse Image?
Meta introduced Muse Image in July 2026 as an image-generation feature in Meta AI, with creative features also described for Instagram and WhatsApp. During the initial rollout, users could @-mention public Instagram accounts as references for image generation. Contemporary coverage said adult users with public profiles could be referenced by default. That described the ability to use public posts as prompts or visual references; it does not establish that Instagram photos were all added to training data for Meta’s image-generation models.
On July 10, Meta updated its announcement to say that the public-account @-mention option had been discontinued. Meta’s statement, reported by the Associated Press, said, “We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available.” Meta’s announcement also describes Muse Image features that use photos a person supplies themselves; those are distinct from referencing another public account. Meta’s Muse Image announcement and update and the Associated Press report document the change.
Can people still use your public Instagram posts as Muse Image references?
Meta said the @-mention reference feature was no longer available as of its July 10, 2026 update. The announcement does not establish whether related settings remain in the app or whether other Meta AI features use content under separate settings or policies. So the specific launch feature should not be treated as currently available, but this update alone does not answer every question about Instagram content and Meta AI.

How to check Instagram’s reuse controls
During the July 2026 rollout, contemporaneous reports described controls in Instagram’s Sharing and reuse settings for preventing posts and reels from being reused with Meta AI features. Those articles reported separate controls for posts and reels. Meta’s removal announcement did not confirm that those toggles remain, specify their current labels, or verify their availability by account type or region. Treat the reported path as historical, not guaranteed current instructions.

- Open Instagram’s settings. Look for a section labeled Sharing and reuse, as reported during the rollout.
- Review the post and reel reuse options. If controls for allowing reuse with Meta AI features appear, review and change them according to your preference.
- Check the app’s current help and settings. If the section or controls are absent, do not assume an old menu path still applies; the current interface and availability have not been confirmed.
TechCrunch’s contemporaneous opt-out coverage describes the reported settings during the initial rollout.

What the change does—and does not—mean
- The discontinued feature was the ability to @-mention public Instagram accounts as image-generation references.
- Its removal does not mean Muse Image itself was discontinued; Meta’s announcement describes Muse Image and other ways to create images, including using photos supplied by the user.
- The cited reports concern reuse of public posts as references. They do not show that every Instagram photo was used to train an image-generation model.
- The official update does not verify the current Instagram controls, their regional availability, or whether they affect any other Meta AI features.
