To find out whether an Apple device is still getting updates, check two things: whether its exact model can install the latest major operating system, and whether Apple lists a security update for the older version it runs. Those checks distinguish a device that is current, one that is still patched, and one for which no compatible update is currently listed. These are practical labels, not official Apple support categories.

What “current,” “still patched,” and “neither” mean

Apple can publish security updates for an older operating-system branch while also offering a newer major release. So “not on the newest OS” does not automatically mean “no longer patched.” Check model compatibility and the release listings separately.

  • Current: Apple lists the exact model as compatible with the latest major OS. The model can install the current major release listed by Apple.
  • Still patched: The model cannot install the latest major OS, but Apple lists a security update for the older OS branch or that device family. Confirm the version and release date.
  • Neither: The official sources you checked list no update compatible with the exact device and its installed OS. This is a finding about the current listings, not a formal Apple label or a guarantee that no update will ever appear.

A listed patch is evidence of an update for that branch or device; it does not promise a fixed period of future support or protection from every security risk.

Is my iPhone still getting security updates?

Check the iPhone’s exact model, its installed iOS version, and Apple’s current security release list. Do not rely on purchase year alone: eligibility depends on the specific model.

As of October 7, 2026, Apple listed iOS 27.0.1 as the latest iOS release and iOS 26.7.1 among the older-branch releases. Apple’s compatibility listing for iOS 27.0.1 includes iPhone 11 and later. These are a dated snapshot, not a promise that the same versions or device cutoffs will remain current. Apple’s security releases lists releases and their “Available for” device information.

Older iPhones can sometimes receive security fixes without moving to the newest major iOS. For example, Apple said on April 2, 2026, that updates for iOS 15 and iOS 16 were released on March 11, 2026, to extend protection to older devices unable to update to the latest iOS. Apple’s guidance concerned specific reported web attacks, so it should not be read as assurance that every older iPhone receives regular updates or is protected against all threats. The article also said devices on iOS 13 or iOS 14 needed to update to iOS 15 to receive those protections, and suggested considering Lockdown Mode, if available, for people unable to update. Apple’s guidance on protection against web attacks describes that specific case.

Can my old Mac still be updated?

On the Mac, use Software Update to see what Apple offers for that model, then compare the result with Apple’s compatibility information for the latest macOS. Apple says, “Software Update shows only software that is compatible with your Mac model.” If it reports no available software, that means no newer compatible software is being offered through that check; it does not by itself establish a formal support cutoff.

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings, then General, then Software Update. On older macOS versions, open System Preferences and choose Software Update.
  2. Note the installed macOS version and whether Software Update offers an update.
  3. Check Apple’s compatibility information for the latest major macOS version to see whether your exact Mac model is eligible.
  4. Before installing new Mac software, back up your data. Apple recommends using the latest macOS compatible with your Mac for security, stability, and compatibility.

As of October 7, 2026, Apple listed macOS 27.0.1 as the latest release and also listed security releases for macOS Tahoe 26.7.1 and Sequoia 15.8.1. This illustrates why checking older branches matters: a Mac may not run the newest major version and still have an update listed for its branch. Check Apple’s macOS update instructions and the security release index for current details.

How to check any Apple device’s update status

  1. Identify the exact product and model. Find the model name or generation in the device’s settings or product information; the year you bought it is not enough to establish compatibility.
  2. Record its installed operating-system version. Note the iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, or visionOS version as applicable.
  3. Check the latest major OS and model eligibility. Use Apple’s current release and compatibility information for that product family.
  4. Check for older-branch releases. On Apple’s security releases page, look for updates to the installed OS branch and the listed devices that can receive them.
  5. Install updates that are offered and compatible. For Mac, use Software Update; back up before installing new Mac software.
  6. If no update appears, state the result narrowly. Confirm the model against Apple’s compatibility information and say no compatible update is currently listed in the sources checked. Do not infer a permanent cutoff from the device’s age alone.

What a security patch does—and does not—tell you

A security update addresses security issues described for that release; it is not necessarily the same thing as moving to a new major OS. Major updates can include new features as well as security fixes, while Apple’s release notes may also describe security-focused updates separately. Apple’s iOS update history shows examples of both kinds of release.

Apple advises users to keep software up to date to maintain security. But a release listing does not establish how long Apple will continue updating a branch, cover every risk, or show whether every app or service you rely on still works with an older OS. Check app and service requirements separately when deciding whether an older device remains practical for you.

When should you replace an unsupported iPhone?

Consider replacement when your exact iPhone cannot install the current major iOS, no compatible security update is listed for its installed branch, and the device no longer meets your security or app requirements. First verify the model and check Apple’s latest compatibility and security listings; update if a compatible release is available. If you choose to replace it, base that decision on your needs and the specific model’s compatibility rather than assuming that age alone proves it is unsupported. Apple’s release information does not establish an individual model’s future support duration or current marketplace availability.
