For a value that is already an array, check whether array.length === 0. To check whether it contains elements, use array.length > 0. If the value may be null, undefined, or not an array at runtime, guard or validate it before reading .length.
Check a known array with length
length is a numeric property on arrays. It gives the number of elements, so zero means the array is empty:
const items: string[] = [];
const isEmpty = items.length === 0;

Why array === [] does not work
Do not compare an array to a newly created empty array. Arrays are objects, and equality compares their references rather than their contents. The expression items === [] compares items with a different array object, so it does not tell you whether items has elements. TypeScript 4.8 release notes document this comparison as always false: TypeScript 4.8.

Handle a value that may be null or undefined
If the declared type allows either nullish value, check that the value exists before accessing its length:
if (items != null && items.length === 0) {
// items is present and empty
}The != null check excludes both null and undefined. TypeScript narrows the type after the check, allowing the .length access. A broad truthiness check can hide valid falsy values in a union, so use a guard that matches the values you intend to exclude. See the TypeScript handbook’s section on Narrowing.

Validate uncertain runtime input
When a value comes from an external source or has a broad type, it may not be an array at runtime. Use Array.isArray to check its shape before reading .length:
if (Array.isArray(value)) {
const isEmpty = value.length === 0;
}This pattern is useful when a value can have multiple possible runtime types. The TypeScript documentation explains array checks in TypeScript for JavaScript Programmers.
