If whitespace-only input should also count as blank, use value.trim().length === 0. For values that may be null or undefined, check for those before accessing string properties.
Check for an exactly empty string
An empty string contains zero characters. Either of these checks expresses that rule:
const isEmpty = (value: string): boolean => value.length === 0;
const isEmptyByLiteral = (value: string): boolean => value === "";Both return true for "" and false for a string containing any characters, including spaces. Use whichever makes the intent clearest in its context; there is no need to prefer one on performance grounds.
Decide whether whitespace counts as blank
A string containing spaces, tabs, or other trim-removable whitespace is not an exactly empty string. If your validation rule treats whitespace-only input as blank, trim before checking:

const isBlank = (value: string): boolean => value.trim().length === 0;This changes the meaning of the check: it treats both "" and whitespace-only strings as blank. Use it for requirements such as a field that must contain non-whitespace text, not when you need to distinguish whitespace from zero characters.
Handle nullable or optional values first
If a value can be null or undefined, its type should say so, and your code must narrow it before calling .length. With strictNullChecks enabled, these are distinct from string; see the TypeScript TSConfig Reference for strictNullChecks.

function isAbsentOrEmpty(value: string | null | undefined): boolean {
return value == null || value.length === 0;
}In JavaScript and TypeScript, value == null matches both null and undefined. The equality check also narrows the value, so the length access on the other side of || is safe. This helper intentionally considers either nullish value or an empty string absent; if those states have different meanings in your application, handle them in separate branches instead.
Why not use a truthiness check?
An empty string is falsy, so if (!value) will enter its branch for "". But that is a broader falsiness test, not an explicit empty-string check; it can also match other falsy values if the variable’s type allows them. Even for a string-only value, truthiness can obscure whether the code is handling the empty-string case deliberately.

The TypeScript Handbook’s discussion of narrowing warns that a broad truthiness guard can cause code to stop handling the empty-string case correctly. Use an explicit equality or length check when the distinction matters. Equality checks also help TypeScript narrow unions; for example, testing value !== null rules out null without ruling out "".

Keep the condition aligned with the field’s actual validation rule: exact emptiness, whitespace-aware blankness, and missing input are separate cases.
