Check each FortiMail appliance’s exact software version and whether Identity Based Encryption (IBE) is enabled, then compare its files and relevant logs with the complete, current indicators in Fortinet advisory FG-IR-26-175. Fortinet has reportedly confirmed active exploitation, so investigate possible prior compromise as well as applying the applicable mitigation or update: updating the appliance does not show whether it was compromised earlier.

Why this check matters

CVE-2026-104286 is described as a path-traversal vulnerability that may allow an unauthenticated attacker to write arbitrary files on the underlying FortiMail system using crafted HTTP or HTTPS requests. NCSC-NL also identifies insufficient neutralization of null bytes and says the listed releases are affected when IBE is enabled. NVD records Fortinet’s CNA-assigned CVSS v3.1 score as 9.8, Critical.

Fortinet reportedly confirmed exploitation in the wild. The CVE was added to CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog on October 1, 2026; NVD displays October 4, 2026 as the catalog due date. These dates and status are time-sensitive, so check the current Fortinet advisory and CISA catalog before acting.

Determine whether an appliance may be in scope

Do not assess exposure from the product name alone. Record the release and IBE state for each appliance. The ranges and branch thresholds below are reported by NVD and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security; NCSC-NL says IBE must be enabled for the listed releases to be affected.

7.2 7.2.0–7.2.9 Upgrade to branch 7.4 or above

The branch thresholds are not a substitute for checking Fortinet’s current advisory: the government-source records do not establish that every target release is available at the authoritative timestamp. Confirm the current affected scope, fixed releases, and supported upgrade path with Fortinet before making production changes.

Check for indicators and investigate possible compromise

  1. Inventory each appliance. Record its exact FortiMail release and whether IBE is enabled. Compare both facts with the scope above; retain the inventory so you can track the status of every appliance.
  2. Get the complete indicator set from Fortinet. Retrieve FG-IR-26-175 directly and use its current file, hash, network, and behavioral indicators. CERT-FR and NCSC-NL confirm Fortinet published indicators, but secondary reproductions are not a substitute for the complete vendor list.
  3. Compare indicators with files and relevant logs. Use Fortinet’s instructions to identify what to inspect. Look for matches and unexplained file changes or activity. A secondary reproduction attributed to Fortinet lists the behavioral strings archive234 and /migadmin, and suspected source IPs 79.141.169.187 and 45.129.0.192. These are examples only, not a complete or independently verified indicator set. Beazley Security also reproduces paths for /data/bin/mailservice and /data/bin/webconsole; obtain their exact hashes and, more importantly, verify all values against the Fortinet advisory before operational use.
  4. Preserve evidence and investigate matches. Preserve relevant files and logs, and follow your organization’s incident-response process if you find a match or unexplained change. A clean result against only a partial indicator list—or the absence of one indicator—does not establish that exploitation did not occur.
  5. Apply the current mitigation or fixed release. Follow the Fortinet advisory for the affected appliance and verify the applicable instructions and operational impact before changing configuration. Telkom CSIRT reproduces guidance to restrict management access to trusted or private networks and disable IBE as a workaround; confirm the exact current vendor guidance rather than relying on this secondary summary.

How to interpret the result

  • Version in an affected range and IBE enabled: treat the appliance as potentially exposed, check the current vendor guidance, and investigate for evidence of prior activity.
  • Version in an affected range and IBE disabled: NCSC-NL’s stated condition for affected releases is not met, but confirm the current Fortinet scope and follow vendor mitigation guidance.
  • Version outside the listed affected ranges: verify against FG-IR-26-175 for current scope and supported fixed releases; do not infer that a device was never exposed or compromised solely from its current version.
  • No match found: record which complete indicator set and evidence sources were checked. Do not treat a search of secondary examples alone as a clean bill of health.
