Before driving on Skye, check Traffic Scotland for trunk-road incidents and planned works, check Road Works Scotland separately for local-road works, and use available traffic cameras for extra context. Check again shortly before departure: planned schedules can change, and no single live map should be treated as a guaranteed list of every closure on the island.
1. Set your journey and travel date
Start with your origin, destination, intended travel date, and approximate arrival time. The relevant disruption depends on which approach you take and which roads you will use on Skye, so a generic route recommendation cannot account for every trip.
Traffic Scotland’s route planner can display information for a selected journey and its map offers layers for current and future travel conditions. Open Traffic Scotland’s map and route planner and enter your journey before reviewing the route and map details.
2. Check trunk-road incidents and works
Use Traffic Scotland for Scotland’s trunk-road information. Its map and route-planning service covers incidents, congestion, roadworks, cameras, weather warnings, bridge information, and future planned works. 3. Look up planned works for your travel date
For a trip planned in advance, consult the Traffic Scotland planned-roadworks listing. Read the notice for the specific dates, location, and traffic-management arrangements. A notice may describe a full closure, a diversion, convoy control, or scheduled opportunities to pass; those arrangements are not interchangeable with an unrestricted road.
Follow the current notice and signs at the site. Do not assume a standard diversion or infer that the road is open simply because a previous search result or saved route does not show a closure.
4. Check local roads separately
Traffic Scotland directs drivers to Road Works Scotland for local-road information. Check Road Works Scotland for local roads on Skye as a separate step; Traffic Scotland’s trunk-road information should not be treated as a complete local-road closure feed. Traffic Scotland live traffic information

5. Use cameras as a supporting check
Traffic Scotland’s map can show available live cameras along a route, including a listing for a camera at the A87 Skye Bridge. Camera images can provide visual context, but they do not replace road-closure notices or establish that a route will remain open for your arrival. Traffic Scotland traffic cameras
6. Re-check shortly before setting off
Roadwork dates, working hours, and traffic-management plans may be revised. For example, a Traffic Scotland A87 resurfacing notice describing 2026 work was archived and recorded schedule changes; it is not a current closure timetable. A separate Transport Scotland page describes proposed A87 Sconser maintenance for financial year 2026/27 and says the programme may change. Neither should be read as confirmation of a closure today. Check the current notices again close to departure, especially if your journey is weeks or months away. Traffic Scotland’s travel news and Transport Scotland’s traffic-management updates are additional places to review dated announcements.

7. Add a winter check when conditions call for it
For winter journeys or difficult weather, consult Highland Council’s Winter Services: Isle of Skye page and its 2026/27 winter-road network map. The map distinguishes primary and secondary routes; it does not guarantee that a road will be treated or clear when you travel.
